Marriott and SPG have announced that their co-branded cards will begin earning bonus points across brands between the companies.
The Details
Beginning today:
- Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card by American Express Card Members in the U.S. can earn two Starpoints® for every eligible dollar spent using the Card directly at hotels participating in Marriott Rewards globally. (Including Ritz Carlton as well.)
- Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card from Chase and The Ritz-Carlton Rewards Credit Card from JPMorgan Card Members in the U.S. can earn five Marriott Rewards or The Ritz-Carlton Rewards points for every eligible dollar spent using their respective Card on qualifying purchases made at participating global SPG properties.
These changes are now in place and all co-branded cards earn the increased rewards as of today. You can find the full details of the change in the company’s press release.

Why would anyone want to use the Marriott card at all then? The SPG would get 6 MR pt/$, the Marriott card gets 5 MR pt/$ at any Marriott property.
Right, if you have both cards you should use the SPG card, but I expect that many readers only have one or the other.
I wonder if this is going to devalue the star points.
