It’s been a while, but Office Depot is back with a promotion this week offering a $10 instant discount when buying $300+ of Visa gift cards.
The Deal
- Buy $300 or more in Visa gift cards and save $10 instantly.
Key Terms
- Limit one offer per customer.
- Discount applied at register.
- Offer expires August 4, 2018.
- Offer valid in store on Visa gift cards only.
Quick Thoughts
With only a $10 instant discount, this deal sadly doesn’t offer negative cost Visa gift cards. However, it can be a profitable deal for those of you with a card that earns 5x / 5% at office supply stores.
The best way to maximize this promotion would be to buy two $200 cards rather than a $200 card and a $100 card. Although you’ll be paying marginally more in activation fees, those will be more than offset by the additional rewards you’ll earn from spending an extra $100.
The terms state that there’s a limit of one per customer, so don’t give your Office Depot Rewards number when buying these. There have been reports that Office Depot’s system won’t allow an account to take advantage of this type of offer more than once, so not giving your Rewards number bypasses this restriction.

I’ve gotten $20 off on the first two times I took advantage of this deal (buying Style/Fashion Everywhere VGCs that come with only a $4.95 fee), but the third time I got $30 off. I have no idea why, but I’m going back today for more 🙂
Update: Just got back home from a late evening run to two nearby OD’s where I received $30 and $20 off, respectively. I don’t know why I’m getting more than the advertised $10 off or why it varies between $20 and $30. I will note that I have apparently qualified as a VIP in their rewards program, so maybe that plays a part? In any case, I’m happy and will continue to take advantage of this deal since I’m trying to reach $25K in spend on my Aviator Red for the add’l $3K in MQDs for AA elite status.
Are you giving your rewards number for each transaction?
The last time a similar discount came out I jumped all over it because these opportunities have become less frequent. About 2 months later a better negative cost offer came out but I was already maxed out and had to pass. I think I’ll be more restrained this time.

Can you use the Visa gift cards to pay off a card?
My first purchase today at Office Depot for $400 worth of Visa gift cards ended up totaling $393. Don’t ask me how. I double checked both cards to make sure they actually got loaded with $200 each, and they did. So I went back and bought 2 more at $200, and this time it rang up at $403 So $800 worth of Visa gift cards for $797 +40,000 Chase rewards points from my ink business card – – time well spent today, thanks to your post.
50x at office supply stores, nice!
800×5% ink =4000 not 40000
Yes! 4,000 URs (not 40,000). At 1 cent redemption value that’s $40 … at both Hyatt Place Boise properties, that’s 4/5 of one free night.
I had a similar experience on Sunday, except my second purchase of $400 was $20 off. First one was only $10 off. I did provide my rewards number both times. I bought 4 more cards on Monday in 2 transactions without rewards number and both rang up with $10 discount.
