If you’re in the hunt for Delta elite status, you may be trying to cram in a December flight or two. But that can be very expensive and time consuming. Fortunately, there’s an easy alternative: apply for certain Delta cards that offer $2,500 MQD Headstarts. Even late in December, it’s not too late to earn MQDs this way.
Overview
Four Delta credit cards automatically offer $2,500 MQDs each year. Delta calls these “MQD Headstarts.” And, as pointed out by Eye of the Flyer, you just need the card to be open before the end of this year for the MQDs to count towards this year’s elite earnings (see: When Do Delta’s $2,500 MQD Headstarts Post to Your Account?).
In my post, Shortcuts to Delta elite status, I outlined a number of ways to earn Delta MQDs other than through flying. In this post I’m focusing on the easiest of all: applying for one or more Delta credit cards. Some things to keep in mind:
- You will begin earning $2,500 MQDs annually starting with the calendar year in which your card was opened. It takes a while for the MQDs to post, though. If you open a card in December 2024, for example, the MQDs might not post to your account until 2025, but the MQDs will be back-dated to 2024 and then you’ll get another $2,500 MQDs for 2025.
- If you’ve had any of these cards before, or if Amex doesn’t like your card history for other unknown reasons, it’s possible that you won’t qualify for a welcome bonus when you apply now. You’ll know if that happens because when you apply online there will be a pop-up box telling you that you won’t qualify for a welcome bonus and it will then ask you whether you want to continue with the application. Important: even if you don’t qualify for a welcome bonus, you will qualify for the $2,500 MQDs if your application is approved. The card’s benefits, including the $2,500 MQDs, are not considered part of the welcome bonus.
- Amex generally limits people to opening at most 1 credit card within 5 days and at most 2 credit cards within 90 days. You’ll find these and other application rules here: Complete Guide to Credit Card Application Rules by Bank.

Delta Elite Status Overview
2024 Elite Requirements
Delta elite status is be based entirely on MQDs (Medallion Qualifying Dollars). MQDs are defined primarily as dollars spent on Delta flights and Delta Vacations (MQDs are earned once you actually travel, not when you purchase the travel), but they can also be earned through holding certain credit cards, spend on certain credit cards, and as Choice Benefits for Platinum and Diamond elite members.
In 2024, the following MQD amounts are required to earn each level of elite status for the 2025 Medallion year. Once the thresholds are met, you get elite status immediately, and it will last through the rest of 2024, all of 2025, and through January of 2026:
- Silver Medallion: $5,000 MQDs
- Gold Medallion: $10,000 MQDs
- Platinum Medallion: $15,000 MQDs
- Diamond Medallion: $28,000 MQDs

- Unlimited complimentary upgrades (when available, upgrade from coach to first class on domestic flights). Higher status leads to better chance of upgrades.
- Waived same-day confirmed fees and waived same-day standby fees (switch to different flight on same day as ticketed flight). Requires Gold or higher. Info about getting value from same day changes can be found here: Leveraging Delta’s Same Day Flight Changes.
- Complementary Preferred seat selection (choose exit row seats with lots of legroom)
- Complementary Comfort+ Seats (more leg room, free drinks, better snacks).
- Regional upgrade certificates. While these rarely confirm before the flight, waitlisting a regional upgrade puts you to the front of the line for upgrading at the gate. This is great to use for flights where upgrades are most important to you. For example, I use these for flights of about 3 hours or longer. This is a choice benefit for Platinum and Diamond status. Upgrade certificates can be applied to both paid and award tickets.
- Global upgrade certificates. Use these to upgrade from economy to Premium Select, or from Premium Select to business class on any flight when upgrade space is available. When you upgrade from economy to Premium Select, Delta will put you on the business class (Delta One) upgrade list 24 hours before your flight. This is a choice benefit for Diamond status only. Upgrade certificates can be applied to both paid and award tickets.
- Free award changes and cancellations. This used to be huge, but now all awards originating in North America are free to change or cancel for all members. With Platinum and Diamond status, that benefit extends to flights originating elsewhere. Requires Platinum or higher for free changes on awards originating outside of North America.
Conclusion
Applying for a new Delta Platinum or Reserve card is the fastest and easiest way to earn MQDs towards Delta elite status. As long as your card is open before the end of the year, you will earn MQDs for this year and for every year afterwards as long as your card account remains open.
IMHO worth noting that these don’t stack, so if you’ve already received one MQD Headstart with one of these cards this year, you won’t get another 2500 by opening a second card.
That’s not accurate. You can get up to 4 Headstarts in one year by getting all four cards. Where they won’t stack is if you product change from one to another. For example, if you have a Delta Platinum card and product change to the Delta Reserve, you won’t get a second Headstart that way.
Wow, thanks for the correction. I could have sworn that Delta specifically stated that they won’t stack. Probably would used the MQM conversion for MQDs and pushed to retain plat one more year had I realized that.
I just got off the phone with Delta Amex and they said applying for a new card would not give the $2,500 headstart. They said only one headstart credit per year per Skymiles account. I called back and spoke with another agent thinking the first person was wrong and they said the same. Doesn’t work…
It’s common for call reps to be misinformed. Check out the FAQ here: https://www.americanexpress.com/en-us/credit-cards/credit-intel/mqd-headstart-and-boost/
If I have multiple eligible Cards, can I receive MQD Headstart multiple times?
YES – with certain limits. Regardless of the number of Eligible Cards a SkyMiles Member may hold, each SkyMiles Member may only receive one $2,500 MQD deposit per Eligible Card type each Medallion Qualification Year and is limited to a maximum of four deposits across all Eligible Cards each Medallion Qualification Year (for $10,000 MQDs total).
During the pandemic I made it to Platinum. Now at Gold. Trying to decide whether to get a card that would get me to Silver status, but since I only really use Delta to go see family living in Georgia once or twice a year do not see any worthwhile benefit to any Delta elite status. I have one Delta card (so get free bags) – am I missing something?
You’re not missing anything. I wouldn’t recommend seeking status if you fly so infrequently with Delta
hi, do u think the same is true if you upgrade in December from the Delta Gold to one of the headstart Delta cards?
Great question. Yes I believe that would work
