Quick Thoughts
If you have paid Marriott stays coming up, saving forty bucks beats the return you’d otherwise earn on a Marriott credit card. If this shows up on one of your Bonvoy cards, all the better.
Keep in mind that this offer is valid only at properties in the US and US territories. It also excludes Design Hotels. The Protea exclusion is redundant since those are outside the US anyway.
Historically, Amex Offers like this for Marriott have been triggered by a gift card purchase at the front desk despite the fact that the terms exclude gift cards purchases. YMMV, and remember that you would need to purchase at the front desk to have a chance — purchases made in the gift shop almost surely will not trigger the offer. I haven’t tried to purchase a gift card post-Bonvoy, but it has always been kind of hit-or-miss as to whether properties sell gift cards at all and then whether or not they have them in stock (and in my experience it is just as much a gamble as to whether or not the employee at the desk is trained in how to load/sell them). It might be worth calling to see if a location has them before you make a trip to the hotel. Also note that, at least to my knowledge, Marriott gift cards can not be used at legacy Starwood hotels.
It’s worth syncing this up now and stacking it the next time we see a double-digit portal payout on Marriott hotels. Since booking through a portal brings you to the Marriott site to book directly, such a booking should easily trigger this offer while enabling you to double-dip with portal rewards. We’ve been seeing increased rates every couple of weeks, so it should be easy to catch a good opportunity during the offer period.
As always, we have added this to our Current Amex Offers database.
Trying to pre-pay a stay in July to hit this offer, but I’m running into a weird situation where the property is stalling to charge my card. Anyone ever experience this?
[…] more for a stay. If you are spending that much, check to see if you were targeted for the general Marriott Amex Offer as that offers a slightly higher statement credit of $40 when spending $200. For those spending […]
Not working on GC purchases. Went to my reliable Marriott where Amex offers always worked when purchasing gift cards and did not work. Everything processed as previous times when I did get the credit. Amex is apparently getting smarter and is somehow being able to see gift card purchases.

Always US only. Hardly ever works for me.
Someone posted a sync link on DoC, worked for me!

Logged into amex, no $40 offer was available. Was sent a snail mail with the above link, logged in and there it was.. 🙂

Got this on wife’s Amex platinum which will work perfectly for a stay this week that was booked during the 10x Ebates last week. Ebates was a new account to switch over to earning MR so earning 1500 MR Ebates bonus, 10% MR back, $40 Amex offer, and double Bonvoy points on a stay that will be reimbursed by work. 🙂
Nice!
So, we cant use this at Westin but can with Ritz?
You can use this at any Marriott Bonvoy property in the US. My comment on legacy Starwood properties was just a reminder that if you use this offer to buy a Marriott gift card (say at your local Courtyard or something), it won’t be accepted at legacy Starwood properties (like Westin) as far as I know. Alternatively, if you have a stay planned before the expiration date, you can certainly just spend $200 at a Westin the US or US territories to trigger this offer.
I just stayed at the Gwen in Chicago (Luxury collection) and was able to use a Marriott gift card during check out.
So it’s on almost every one of our cards EXCEPT our two Bonvoy cards. If we have a $400+ stay coming up, I guess that means we split the charge between two cards, right?
Yup.
I had it on 2 cards (membership rewards), but was only able to add it to one, even on the old site. How do you split the payments or add the offer to more that one card?
Since my wife and I both have our own AMEX accounts, we were each able to activate the offer on one of our cards. Splitting the payment will be easy as we just have to tell the front desk to put $201(I never like to do only the exact amount for the offer) on one card and the remaining balance on the other.
0/7 for me on this offer, including 2 Bonvoy cards. Shame as I have a few stays coming up.
Actually have a stay coming up in May with resort fees that this offer would be perfect for. Naturally, it’s on 0 out of my 6 Amex cards (including 2 Bonvoy cards). But I have plenty of Hilton offers.
