Quick Thoughts
Keep in mind that once you load Airbnb gift cards to your account, you can not transfer them to someone else. There are also some restrictions like only being able to use them for the first payment if you pay for a rental in more than one payment, etc. Be aware of Airbnb’s gift card limitations before diving in — but if you’re a regular Airbnb user, these could be very good deals.
As a correction, Airbnb actually lets you use the credits for your second payment if you opt to pay in two installments. It just won’t credit it automatically.
You need to go to the payment setting page. That’s where you can adjust what type of payment is used for the second payment (if you want to switch to a different card for example). To use gift card credit, there are some buttons underneath the payment selection drop down that will allow you to apply any existing credits/gift cards to the overall payment amount. So it is possible (I, in fact, just did it with a booking and can confirm it worked).
Hey Jonathan,
Are you sure about this? That would be great, but digging into it more, I see:
https://www.airbnb.ca/help/article/1696
“If you choose to book with the Payment Plan Feature, the Airbnb Platform will notify you of the amount and schedule of each payment due. On the second payment due date, Airbnb Payments will automatically charge the original Payment Method you used to make the booking. Gift Cards and credits cannot be used for the second payment. Therefore, to the extent a gift card or credit is used for the initial booking using a Payment Plan, Airbnb will only charge the gift card or credit up to the first scheduled amount due”
(I’m not accusing you of lying – if you did it, you did it. Woo!)
Jonathan is correct. What Nick wrote in the post used to be the case, but Airbnb changed the policy a year or two ago and you can now pay the second portion with gift cards too.
Yes, agreed. I’ve used a gift card to pay the remaining balance on several recent AirBnbs. I think they just never updated the terms written above.
>only being able to use them for the first payment if you pay for a rental in more than one payment
Oh, that’s a bummer. We have partially paid for our Airbnbs in Europe next year already. Rats.
(By the way, I’m not seeing that restriction — only the first payment — in the Terms. I’m assuming Nick is right, but…)
Happy Thanksgiving, all!
