Update 5/5/25: We’ve now heard multiple reports of the Rewards+ card again being available for product changes. There’s even one person who was able to do it from an AA card, something which hasn’t been possible with other ThankYou Point-earning cards for some time.
~~~
The Citi Rewards+ card can be a very rewarding component of a multi-card Citi wallet. The card has two main perks: earnings on all purchases are rounded up to the nearest 10 points and there is a 10% rebate on all points redeemed in a calendar year (up to a maximum of 100,000 redeemed points). When paired with the Citi Premier card (and possibly the Custom Cash and/or Double Cash), that rebate alone makes it worth holding for me.
Within Citi’s portfolio of ThankYou point-earning cards, the Rewards+ is undoubtedly the least pursued. That lack of popularity may be its undoing, as Doctor of Credit is reporting a rumor (via reddit) that the card is about to be unavailable for new applications and will be discontinued.
Quick Thoughts
Doctor of Credit notes that this is a rumor, but I’ve heard it elsewhere and think that there’s probably some fire behind that smoke. Outside of the folks who try to automate thousands of 1 cent transactions in order to game the roundup perk, it’s never been a terribly popular card. Frankly, besides small transactions, there’s little reason to spend on it.
What will make me sad to see it go is that 10% points rebate. Regardless of whether you cash out Citi points or transfer them to its increasingly interesting portfolio of travel partners, maxing it out every year effectively makes it a no annual fee card with a 10K anniversary bonus. I love ThankYou points, and I love them even more when I get 10% off redemptions.
Citi is usually fairly lenient about letting current cardholders keep discontinued products, as the small army of Citi Prestige cardholders can attest to. For those that don’t already have it, but who are invested in the Citi ecosystem, that might make it worth taking a swing at in the next few days before the rumored hammer drops.
Product changing my Thank You Preferred card to a Rewards+ wasn’t an option. Same for my Double Cash.
I also just tried Double cash and Dividend but they could not product change either one to Citi Rewards+. There were three other options though like Custom Cash. I assume it doesn’t depend on the rep, and calling again won’t help?
No go this morning. I tried to request product change from Custom Cash, Reward+ was not an option. Agent offered Double Cash, Diamond Preferred, and Strata Premier.
When was this aa pc dp?
Just called to try to pc my aa platinum select and they initially said the rewards + was an option, I said great! Then when they tried to actually process it they received an error and it wouldn’t work. Other aa plus Costco were options.
Same exact thing happened to me. Just went with the Mileup card.
I did a product change yesterday (May 4th) and was offered the Rewards+ as an alternative. Separately, a Citi manager has stated it will be refreshed as the Citi Strata Select.
Hopefully, the Citi Strata Select will have the benefit/superpower for 10% Points Back on an award redemption for the first 100,000 points you redeem per year.
I’ve converted right before it got nerfed.
Any chance of 10% points being awarded retrospectively?
Citi has repeatedly been sending offers to upgrade from Rewards+ back to a Premier with a waived first year AF. Unfortunately no bonus points for doing so. Hopefully they don’t forcibly change it with the card discontinuing.
Does anyone think the 10% rebate will go away soon? I don’t know how fast Citi will act, but I spent about 40k points this year and might burn another 60k now to get ahead of this.
I don’t imagine that it will go away anytime soon for current cardholders. In the past, discontinued products have been maintained for folks that already had them for quite some time (or indefinitely).
So glad I applied yesterday, I think.
I applied last week but haven’t gotten the card in the mail yet.
I got the card in the mail. I hope you did too.
I didn’t use mine much, but would try to put a little spend on it each year. A couple weeks ago I got a letter saying they closed my rewards+ account for not using it enough. Doesn’t seem like a coincidence with this news. So if you have one that you want to keep, it might be wise to put a charge or two on it.
RIP Citi Rewards+ CC (for new applicants). I am hoping it stays around a long time like the Citi Prestige / Citi Dividend.
9 Days later… It’s still there. Maybe April 1st will be the day?
If this does indeed happen I wonder if it has anything to do with the Sears card that earns TYP from Citi being transitioning on April 12th to just Citi TYP card? Maybe this will be the one no annual fee TYP card going forward? Wild speculation here
Can you pc from a double cash or custom cash?
