I don’t think Tim’s answer to Avios expiration is exactly right, but perhaps he is making an assumption that doesn’t apply to me. I only keep Avios in one program at a time. Sometimes its BA, sometimes it QR — it depends where I needed them to be the last time. So, when I transfer them, the Avios are going into an account that has a zero balance. There is no existing expiration date to inherit.
When I recently transferred Avios from BA to QR, QR’s website showed an updated “Valid until: 12 April 2028”, which is three years after the transfer I just did. I confirmed through QR chat that BA transfers reset your expiration date.
I was convinced that Tim got that Air France / Amex Platinum answer wrong because I learned the hard way that Capital One Vx doesn’t provide trip cancelation insurance in a similar situation. But turns out he was right.
I think answering this question for all of the transferrable points ecosystems would be a great post because I think there is a lot of misinformation about what is covered, mainly by that other points website with that guy. And that guy doesn’t allow comments, so that guy never gets any feedback when they are wrong.
Nick had mentioned that he didn’t think there was a welcome bonus option for a 2nd Chase Marriott card but there is: the $250 Bountiful card. The bonus is 85,000 but if open now and can spend 15k this year and again in the first half of 2026 before you upgrade you and you will end up with two 50K free night certs plus 30k to 60k extra Marriott points from spend. Doing this now the avoid the Marriott card opening restrictions
