Up to 40% transfer bonus from Citi to Qatar Avios

3

As flagged by One Mile at a Time, Qatar Airways Privilege Club is offering a transfer bonus of up to 40% when you transfer points from select bank programs to Qatar Airways Avios. The only major US-based bank program that qualifies for the bonus is Citi ThankYou Rewards. Note that this promotion is offered by Qatar Privilege Club, not by Citi. As such, you will not see it reflected in your Citi account. Instead, this one is awarded by Qatar after the transfer. As always, we have added this to our list of current point transfer bonuses.

The Deal

  • This promotion is a tiered bonus being offered by Qatar Airways Privileges Club for those transferring points to Avios from select partner programs, as follows:

Quick Thoughts

This has the potential to be a fantastic transfer bonus for those with Citi ThankYou points. If you’re able to transfer 50,000 points or more, getting a 40% transfer bonus to Avios is a great deal. Keep in mind that Avios can be moved between the following airlines: Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Finnair Plus, Loganair, British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, and Aer Lingus Avios. That means you are not locked into redeeming your Avios with Qatar if a great deal comes up with another Avios airline, though Qatar does have some good uses of Avios on its own.

Keep in mind that the bonus is figured on a per-transaction basis, not a cumulative basis. You’ll need to transfer 50,000 points or more in a single transaction to earn the 40% bonus — cumulative transactions do not earn a higher rate based on the cumulative total.

As mentioned at the outset, Citi is the only major US partner worth considering here. While you could also theoretically get the transfer bonus when transferring from World of Hyatt, you probably wouldn’t want to transfer Hyatt points to Qatar given a poor ratio. And while HSBC issues credit cards in the United States, the terms indicate that only transfers from HSBC in Hong Kong or Mexico qualify for the bonus.

It is also worth highlighting the fact that since this is a transfer bonus being offered by Qatar Privilege Club rather than Citi, you will not see this bonus reflected on the Citi side. Instead, the bonus Avios are scheduled to reach your Qatar Privilege Club account by November 30, 2025. That means that this bonus may not be useful if you have an immediate redemption at hand, since you may not see the bonus for several weeks. Nonetheless, some readers like to keep a baseline of Avios on hand for times when opportunity knocks. While I generally advise against speculative transfers, some readers will disagree with that conventional wisdom — and that can make sense if you use Avios often enough (and since Avios gives you access to a number of different award charts).

Very helpful description of the promotion… There is a lot of good content these days about points/miles and air travel in general, but Frequent Miler continues to be my primary go-to for coverage of points transfer bonuses.

Peter

If you don’t have the Strata Elite / Premier / Citi Prestige but have TY points (DoubleCash) it’s not a bad way to get near a 1:1 ratio for your points instead of 1000:700. It’s basically 50,000 TY points to 49,000 Avios. Obviously picking up a $95 Strata Premier would be more lucrative, but if that’s not an option for whatever reason, it’s a good way to liberate some TY points at close to 1:1 value.

Thank you Nick. Great post!!! I struggle using Citi for Avios now that it transfers to AA. AA from Citi is like my Hyatt from Chase or Alaska from Bilt. It’s hard for me to find as much value in other programs although I know they are out there. AA and Alaska have bailed me out of a jam so many times and Im consistently using them as backups like the way Greg uses United. I guess its my laziness. Do you prefer other programs for your Citi points?
