The rate of return here can be excellent if you’ll be making a booking through one of the included sites, especially when you consider the fact that the portal rewards from Rakuten stack on top of anything you may earn from the destination site/hotel brand.
For instance, you’ll still earn OneKey Cash if booking via Expedia or Hotels.com or you can still earn Best Western points if booking through the Best Western site after clicking through from the portal offers here. That can make for a great deal.
In my experience, I’ve earned rewards through Rakuten based on the overall booking cost, even when using Hotels.com gift cards to pay for part of my booking. In that past experience, I redeemed rewards earned from Capital One Shopping for Hotels.com gift cards, then clicked through Rakuten to Hotels.com to book, paying the majority with my Hotels.com gift card (and the remainder on a credit card). At the time, I wondered whether I’d only earn rewards based on the portion paid with a credit card, but in the end, I earned rewards based on the full price.
This looks like a notably good deal for anyone looking at a vacation rental booking since Marriott Homes & Villas is included and the 10x rate at Expedia is also valid for vacation rentals.
Keep in mind that we sometimes see better targeted rates via Capital One Shopping (provided that you are OK with the fact that Capital One Shopping only offers gift card redemptions). For instance, just today, Stephen received an offer for 30% back at Best Western. While I’d generally prefer transferable points over gift card rewards, I’d lean toward Capital One Shopping with that much gap in payouts. On the other hand, if not for a great targeted offer, I’d be much happier with 10x Amex Membership Rewards points or 10x Bilt points than 10% back via Capital One Shopping — you’ll have to do your own comparison and math to decide between portals based on the offers you have available.
