Quick Thoughts
Cartera is the company that runs these airline shopping portals. It feels like they spun a wheel or threw darts at a dartboard to come up with the spending thresholds and bonus miles/points you’ll earn as they’re all over the place. The Southwest and United portal offers seem to be the most generous on a per dollar basis, but other airline portals might interest you more depending on which miles you value more, if you’re trying to earn status, etc. To max out the American Airlines portal promotion, you’ll need to spend a whopping $1,600 for 4,000 bonus AAdvantage miles versus $1,000 on the Southwest portal to earn an equivalent number of Rapid Rewards points.
Something important to note is that the bonus miles/points you earn from these bonuses don’t count towards status with American Airlines and Southwest. That said, the base points you earn do count toward status, so the bonus miles/points from these promos could still make it worthwhile choosing one or both of those portals over other options.
Something useful about the Alaska and United portals is that they both have card-linked in-store offers, with spending at participating stores counting towards the spending thresholds. That can make it easier to earn the bonus miles from these promotions, especially seeing as some of the eligible retailers also have corresponding Amex Offers, Chase Offers, Citi Offers, etc. which can save you money too.
Don’t forget that Giftcards.com is back on these airline shopping portals as well. Although gift card purchases are listed as being excluded in the terms, orders from Giftcards.com have always counted in the past and there’s no reason to think that they won’t again seeing as the portals track the purchases.
