Quick Thoughts
When it comes to Visa and Mastercard deals in the Just For U program, I think there are two types of offer. There are some where you specifically have to buy $50 or $100 gift cards and some where variable load gift cards will trigger the instant discount.
Based on the wording of this offer, I think this is the latter kind of deal. In other words, I think buying a $500 Mastercard gift card will earn you the $10 discount. (Update: I can confirm that this does work on variable load gift cards.)
If that is indeed the case, buying a $500 card will be a better option for most people because it means you’ll be able to rack up more spend. That’s particularly helpful right now seeing as so many cards are earning more at grocery stores. Not only is the Chase Freedom card earning 5% this quarter, but Chase and American Express announced that many of their cards would earn more at grocery stores for the next 2-3 months, while Citi updated the Prestige card so that the annual travel credit can now be redeemed at grocery stores through the end of the year.

I have steered clear of Mastercard GCs after reading of problems with them. Do you consider them risky? I think the issue had to do with holding them too long.
They do seem to carry more risk than Visa gift cards. Most of the issues I’ve heard of related to MGCs bought from office supply stores, so I’m not sure if variable load cards from grocery stores have had the same issue or not.
The MasterCard gift cards issued by U.S. Bank had a lot of problems with fraud, which I experienced myself unfortunately. I’ve bought many Visa and MasterCard GCs issued by Black Hawk and MetaBank without any problem. (I believe Safeway sells MetaBank). A few months ago there were authorization issues with MasterCard gift cards, but not fraud, and it was eventually resolved.
The Terms and Connections say no cash access, does this mean you can not turn them into money orders?
i don’t think so – it’s probably referring to the fact that you can’t withdraw cash at an ATM with them.
Is that different from buying money orders?
Yes – if you were able to withdraw cash from a VGC via an ATM, there’d be no need for money orders.
