American Airlines has launched a new award sale that’s released 500,000 seats for only 5,000 AAdvantage miles. That includes transcontinental flights between Los Angeles and New York, but there is a catch when it comes to eligible dates and eligible days of the week.

Quick Thoughts

I imagine the 500,000 seats that are included as part of this award sale will get booked up pretty quickly, especially on transcontinental routes like New York to San Francisco and Los Angeles.

American Airlines 5,000 mile award sale routes

There is a catch with this great award sale though. It’s only valid on flights from April 2 to May 29, 2024, plus availability at the 5,000 mile level will seemingly only be found when traveling on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. If you have flexibility to fly on those dates, some of these routes at 5,000 miles will be a steal.

It looks like American isn’t artificially constraining award availability based on a few quick searches I ran. I’d wondered if they were perhaps releasing one 5,000 mile seat per flight on some of the more desirable routes, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. For example, here’s the award availability throughout April for four people from New York to Los Angeles. As you can see, only one of those eligible days doesn’t have 5,000 mile award availability. Even if you can’t travel on Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday, there’s a lot of pricing at the 7,500 mile level on nearly every other day of the month.

It might therefore be that rather than limiting the number of seats on each flight, there’s simply 500,000 seats up for grabs at the 5,000 mile pricing level on a first-come, first-served basis.

Something that’s also worth noting is that these are Main Cabin seats rather than Basic Economy. Among other things, that means you’ll be able to select your seat at the time of booking which could be particularly useful if you’ll be traveling with others.

This award sale is scheduled to end on March 15, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the 500,000 seats selling out before then, so book ASAP if you’re interested.

it’s 3/14 and people want to know what time 3/15 the sale is over. American does not seem to say anywhere.

Where are the first class seats!

A shame that the dates are right after Spring Break for most families

Cant find any 5k return trips at all. Most return are double or triple the points. Not gonna even mention the 8 and 9 hour layovers on a normal 2 hour flight. This is worth it if you have something refundable already planned but I wouldn’t force a trip for this.

[…] Southwest is well known to offer up award sales every few months ( you cancel, rebook, and save some money or points ). Now, American Airlines is getting in on the game, and as long as you’re willing to fly in April or May, on a Tues, Weds, or Sat…you can score an outstanding deal across many city pairs. Supposedly there are over 500k seats available on this sale, and you need to book by March 15th. I did a few quick searches and sure enough ( A LOT OF SPACE is open ). H/T FM […]

Thanks! Snagged ROC-PHL-LAX for 10k. Replacing a UA ROC-EWR-LAX. I was able to redeposit 9,200 miles, bank a $435 flight credit, keep the transcon on a 788 in PE seats and have better flight times. Crazy sweet.

I managed to find 5,000 mile seats for my family of 4 to replace my existing 7,500 mile seats from SoCal to AUS.

I am definitely seeing some availability, but often with complicated connecting itineraries. Nothing on SEA-PHX direct flights on days I need to fly, but there are SEA-DFW-PHX options. While I appreciate award sales, I am gonna pass on this one.

I’m seeing a lot of avail on flights from BHM to different Caribbean Islands… but don’t think I’m going to be able to make it work unfortunately. I wish I could be a digital Nomad for work and the kids were not in school!

AA sure knows what they are doing here! I can find some nice deals from my home city but none that are workable with school/work schedules and already planned vacations just before and after this period.

I do have one cash fare already booked for a Saturday in May but the 5K seats would require changing from a 2PM flight to 7AM. Not worth it for a short 1 hour hop to LA with family – if this was transcon it’d be much more tempting with the savings there.
