Hyatt and American Airlines have offered reciprocal benefits for elite members in one or both of the programs for several years, involving points-earning and promotions such as earning 1,000 bonus AAdvantage miles when staying 2+ nights with Hyatt.
Earlier this week, they launched a fast track status challenge where AAdvantage members with Gold status or higher can get a 90 day trial of World of Hyatt Explorist status with the opportunity to extend that status through February 2025. (Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum get the chance to be upgraded to Globalist status by staying 20 nights during the challenge period).
At the same time, the programs also have a targeted offer for Hyatt elite members, where World of Hyatt Explorist and Globalist members who have linked their World of Hyatt and AAdvantage accounts can get complimentary American AAdvantage elite status when they register for an “American Airlines Instant Status Pass.” They can then extend that status for additional four month periods by completing qualifying Loyalty Point activity.

Quick Thoughts
The AAvantage status pass promo gives you four months to complete the Loyalty Points requirements at which point you get the status for…another four months.
American has effectively divided the Loyalty Points requirements for each level of status by 3 and that’s the requirement for each four month period. You then have to hit that qualification level every four months in order to maintain status. If you don’t, you lose it. While the terms say that your status will be “extended” after meeting three successive four month qualification periods, it will only be to the end of the 2024 membership year, so through February 2025.
This promo is probably best-suited for two groups of people: those that only want status for a short period and those who don’t currently have status, but plan on qualifying next year via some combination of flying and Loyalty Point gaming as they’d have the status in the meantime while qualifying. It will require some organization, though, as it effectively removes thinking about the qualifying requirements as a yearly goal and turns it into a goal that has to be achieved every four months.
This also could be useful for folks that are currently pursuing AAdvantage status, but want to get something higher (ie, Platinum to Platinum Pro or Platinum Pro to Exec Platinum). You could effectively give up on trying to earn points for this year and immediately get a status upgrade while being able to start working on the goal for next year. Doing this would come with two caveats, though.
First, you can only register once every 24 months, so it would put another status pass challenge off limits for 2024 and a good chunk of 2025.
Second, although you’d be earning points towards the status challenge qualification, the actual membership year goes from 3/1-2/28. This means that all of the points earned between now and March would not count towards qualifying for 2025 status, even though they would count towards the status match’s four month period. The match only gives you status through the rest of the next membership year after you registered, not for the following year. So, if you want Platinum status and you earn 25,000 Loyalty Points every four months between now and October, 2024, you’d still have to earn the full 75,000 points to qualify for 2025 status between 3/1/2024 and 2/28/2025.
Overall, I’ve never been a huge fan of this promo, primarily because I think its needlessly complex with the three, four month periods overlapping the membership year. That said, it will be useful to some folks and the one “AAdvantage” that it does have is that it offers a meaningful status while you’re trying qualify. Both Platinum and Platinum Pro offer complimentary first class upgrades (good luck getting them on longer flights, though), complimentary main cabin extra seating, free checked bags and mileage bonuses (60% for Platinum, 80% for Platinum Pro).
I registered as a Globalist (receiving Platinum Pro) and had my status pass period from 9/15/23-1/14/24 and only earned enough for Platinum Status during that time. I was expecting to be reverted down to Platinum, but my status still reflects Platinum Pro today. What’s weirder is that the promo page is showing 3/31/24 as the new end date for my Phase 1, which would make the period about 6 1/2 months. Then it says my phase 2 is from 4/1/2024 – 5/14/2024, which would be only 1 1/2 months.
Anyone see something similar? Not mad about the extra months of Platinum Pro, but pretty confused on the timings
Can anyone send me a screenshot of the email?
I was explorist status when the offer came out, and now I am globalist. I submitted the instant status promo and it only gave me AA plat, not plat pro. I guess AA didn’t get the word that I achieved the next Hyatt status. Anyone know of a way to get AA to recognize my globalist status and grant plat pro for the instant status pass?
I was offered Platinum as a Hyatt Explorist. A few months ago, I also received an offer for 5000 LP if I charged something to my AA credit card every month for three months. I did that, and the LP haven’t posted yet, but the promo is confirmed as completed on the AA promo page.
Question: if I sign up for the match, and then a day/week later the points from the old promo post, will they count towards the 25k I need to renew Platinum, even though all the required activity was 1-3 months ago?
No they will not count towards your status. It says that other promotions do not count towards the status challenge so the 5K points would be void in this case.
Do I understand correctly that participating in the Instant Status promotion does not preclude you from also earning status the normal way? I think someone asked this in a slightly different way below but I wanted to be sure.
I was 7K away from Gold before the challenge. Now I have instant Platimum Pro. It so happens that the 42K it takes for me to keep Platinum Pro for an additional 4 months, is the same amount I would need earn Platinum for the normal March ’24- Feb ’25 status year.
I don’t think 42K every 4 months is sustainable for 3 periods for me, but I do think earning 42K is acheivble for the first period of the promo, especially with the accellerated earning rate that goes with the higher status.
But if we can still be on the normal earning track while also participating in the promotion, I will earn Platinum but also keep Platinum Pro for an additional 4 months. Then I can not worry about the promo anymore, enjoy Platinum for the rest of the status year and use all the points I have accrued.
Thanks for anyone that has any insight on this.
I’ve earned loyalty points since registering for the promotion. And the normal overview page shows that those earned Loyalty Points also count toward the normal membership year as well, as they still count down the miles needed to achieve a given elite level as usual.
i got email from Huatt but when I login to my aa account, the promotion does not show up
I was super excited to stumble upon this yesterday before it was announced, just found in my AAdvantage account – I’ve been on a mission to just earn Gold status (mainly via shopping portal and dining programs) for only a few weeks now but wanted for some flights in November, and possibly several more early thru mid next year…and so simply finding myself Platinum and only needing 25K to extend it (vs the 30.5k I have left just to hit “regular” Gold) is great as I was going to try to rack up points the next two months anyway! Now I can get fewer points and have longer (4 months) to achieve them and still get the benefits – already changed for free to main cabin extra on a three passenger one-way booking I had in late November and saving the $90 on checked bags, just by clicking a Register button! 🙂
So I am currently gold and like 25k loyalty points away from eating gold for the next year. If I do the challenge and accrue say 15k loyalty points but not enough for the status extension will those 15k points count towards the normal status thresholds?
Yes
I can’t get this promo since ive already linked the accounts before. Any tricks to bypass this?
If you’ve already linked your accounts and the promo isn’t showing up in your AA account, it means you’re not currently targeted.
Tim, Like Kody above, I previously linked my accounts but don’t see the promo on my account either. Do you have suggestion for contacting AA to see if they will manually attach the promo code to my account. Thank you
Tim – I was targeted but lke NFD when I click the link it doesnt say anything about the promo it just shows other promos. Is there any other link you can share or something I should be looking for on the AA website or app?
FYI – if you cant sign up via the email link you can call American and sign up for this promotion over the phone.
