With no one really flying internationally at the moment, American Airlines appears to have decided that now would be a great time to increase checked bag fees for those flying in Basic Economy to Europe and Africa.

This just became 25% more expensive to check

American Airlines used to charge $60 each way for a checked bag when flying in Basic Economy transatlantic. For flights booked on or before April 20, 2020, that fee still applies. For bookings from April 21, 2020 onward, that fee is being increased to $75 each way – a 25% increase.

That means that if you want to check a bag on a round trip flight to Europe or Africa, you’re looking at paying $150 round trip. That reduces the value of booking in Basic Economy unless you’re able to contain everything you need for your trip within your carry-on allowance.

Although some American Airlines credit cards offer a free checked bag, that benefit is only available on flights within the US, so you can’t take advantage of it when flying to Europe or Africa.
