Quick Thoughts
In the past, I would have said that 4x is an incredible rate for Apple through the AA portal, or most any portal for that matter. But in the last few weeks, we’ve seen some increasingly aggressive bonuses at Apple, including 10x back via Point Debit and 12-21% back at Slide. There’s also a healthy list of exclusions on this offer, including new generation MacBook Pro’s, iPads and iPad mini’s, as well as gift cards and…shipping?
I’m most interested to see whether or not purchases made with Apple Gift cards will track. While there is a mild “may not be eligible” disclaimer, my guess is that they will count. I bought $1000 in Apple Gift Cards with my first TCB/Slide purchase (and received $230 back for it) and we’ve seen gift cards go on sale at Kroger as well. If I can pay for my order with GC and still get 4x Miles, it becomes a nice cherry on top.
If you have a valid Apple purchase that you’re making anyway, this is the best current payout, so it’s worth taking the easy win.
Note that Delta, Alaska and United are all offering 4x on their portals as well, but with no spending bonus or Loyalty Points earning. Still, if you value any of those currencies above AAdvantage miles, they may be the better option.
I’ll ask a total rube question here: If you don’t resell gift cards, what use is a $100+ Apple gift card?
Not a rube question at all. If you’re not reselling and don’t have plans to buy anything from Apple, I’d say stay from Apple gift cards. 🙂
Since the terms of this deal exclude purchases of gift cards (which may or may not be enforced) I’d say the primary value is for people who actually want real stuff from Apple.
In my case, I stocked up on some discounted gift cards earlier this year, knowing that my wife would be buying a new Macbook soon. So, I’m hoping that we can use the portal for the rewards even though we’ll paying for the “real stuff” with gift cards (which I believe should happen)
