American Express has launched a free credit score reporting tool called American Express MyCredit Guide. This works in much the same way as similar offerings from Credit Karma, Discover, Chase, etc., but there are a couple of features to be aware of – one that has the potential to be good and one that’s not as useful.
American Express MyCredit Guide uses the VantageScore 3.0 credit score by TransUnion and is free for everyone to use, even if you’re not currently an American Express cardholder. The score’s updated weekly when you log in and the service also provides a simulator tool to see how various actions could impact your credit score.
An interesting aspect of this service is that American Express states that if you enroll in MyCredit Guide, you may receive prequalified offers and promotions for American Express products. There’s no indication yet as to what that’ll entail – nor any guarantee that you’ll receive anything at all – but it might be worth signing up for MyCredit Guide for that opportunity.
If the promotions are higher signup bonuses that you can obtain in incognito mode, signing up might not be quite as enticing. However, if the promotions contain no lifetime language, the free service would prove to be far more valuable.
Something important to be aware of is that American Express MyCredit Guide is less useful for calculating your 5/24 status. That’s because similar to Chase’s Credit Journey, MyCredit Guide doesn’t list closed accounts. When looking at the number of accounts you’ve opened in the last two years, you’d therefore need to add any that you opened in the prior 24 months but subsequently closed.
Chase's 5/24 Rule: With most Chase credit cards, Chase will not approve your application if you have opened 5 or more cards with any bank in the past 24 months. To determine your 5/24 status, see: 3 Easy Ways to Count Your 5/24 Status. The easiest option is to track all of your cards for free with Travel Freely. |
So far a circular application. And then nothing.
I’m actually a little worried that it’s Fake; no acknowledgement by email.
What an exercise in frustration. I login using my AE credentials and begin an infinite loop of logins and links to an inaccessible tool.
The button “submit” after the verification questions are not working. I tested in 3 different browsers.
