A new, seemingly highly-targeted, Amex Offer is now available to some card members: Spend $75 at U.S. Grocery Stores, get $5 back monthly for up to 3 months.
The Deal
For those targeted, you can add the following offer to your Amex card in order to earn up to $5 per month for 3 months:
- Spend $75 at U.S. Supermarkets, get $5 back for up to 3 months
- Expires 8/31/2021
Terms
Enrollment limited. Must first add offer to Card and then use same Card to redeem. Only U.S.-issued American Express® Cards are eligible. Limit 1 enrolled Card per Card Member across all American Express offer channels. Your enrollment of an eligible American Express Card for this offer extends only to that Card. Offer valid for in-store and online eligible purchases at U.S. Supermarkets. An “eligible purchase” means a purchase made with your enrolled Card at a U.S. supermarket location by 8/31/2021. “Supermarket” means a standalone merchant in the U.S. primarily selling supermarket products. Excludes gasoline purchases and gift card purchases. Specialty Food Stores, Superstores, and Warehouse Clubs are not considered Supermarket stores. Offer is non-transferable. Once you add the offer to your eligible Card, you must spend a minimum of $75 in one or more eligible US transactions by the last day of each calendar month to be considered eligible for a one-time statement credit. You may receive the one-time statement credit, up to 3 times (for up to 3 months of monthly minimum spend) during the offer period. Your ability to redeem will reset on the first day of each calendar month and end on the last day of the same calendar month until 8/31/2021. Limit of 1 statement credit per Card Member per monthly spend and 3 statement credits per Card Member per offer period (total of $15). An “eligible transaction” means one or more US purchases made in a calendar month with your enrolled Card on or before 8/31/2021 totaling at least $75. You may not receive the statement credit if we receive inaccurate information or are otherwise unable to identify your purchase as eligible for the offer. For example, you may not receive the statement credit if (a) the Merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services; or (b) the Merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers); or (c) you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet. Merchants are assigned codes based on what they primarily sell. Your transaction will not qualify if the merchant’s code is not eligible. Purchases may fall outside of the offer period in some cases due to a delay in merchants submitting transactions to us or if the purchase date differs from the date you made the transaction (for example, the purchase date for online orders may be the shipping date). Note that American Express may not receive information about your qualifying purchase from merchant until all items from your qualifying purchase have been provided/shipped by merchant. Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after 8/31/2021, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase. Statement credit may be reversed if qualifying purchase is returned/cancelled. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as qualifying for the offer, you will not receive the statement credit. Limit 1 enrolled Card per American Express Card online account. The enrolled Card account must be active, not past due, canceled, or have a returned payment outstanding to receive statement credit. Any benefit earned from this offer is in addition to the rewards (i.e. Membership Rewards or cash back) earned as part of your existing Card benefits, but your ability to earn spend-based rewards for the purchase will be based on the amount after any statement credit or other discount is applied. Amex Offers are dynamic and personalized, so the offers you see may change. For questions regarding your Card Account, please call the number on the back of your Card. By adding an offer to a Card, you agree that American Express may send you communications about the offer. POID: K23Q:0001
My Thoughts
$5 back on $75 amounts to a maximum rebate of 6.7%. That’s pretty good for something as general as supermarket spend, but since it is capped at only $5 per month for 3 months I find this offer pretty underwhelming. Still, it’s worth loading to your card if you’re targeted for the offer.

I assume the whole point of all these offers is to create customer engagement. In fact, the whole of Amex offer is really pretty annoying. It’s annoying to knowingly miss out on stuff without logging into my account and looking through all my cards, or even logging in after FM posts it.
Amex sometimes sends emails of a few things that are available, but I’d much rather have them add everything and send you one email telling you what’s offered.
My time is worth quite a bit, even if it’s spent flipping between Fox and MSNBC and having them both contribute to my dementia
