Sapphire Reserve vs Preferred

Showdown: Sapphire Reserve vs Preferred First Year Value

10
At a high level, the Chase Sapphire Preferred appears to offer better first year value that the Sapphire Reserve. After all, the Preferred has a better signup bonus and waives the first year annual fee. But the Reserve offers a number of valuable benefits that can easily outweigh its annual fee. So, let's drill down and see which one really is better for first year value...

Book United flights online with Singapore miles

63
The ability to book United and other Star Alliance flights online with Singapore Airlines miles is great for a number of reasons: Singapore Airlines miles are easy to get; their award pricing is sometimes much better than United's; they have no close-in ticketing fees; and their change and cancellation fees are much lower than United's.

Buy miles via Amex Membership Rewards (only through 12/30/23)

In general I don't recommend purchasing airline miles, even at a discount, but if you have an immediate need for miles for a high value award, it can make sense. If you have an Amex Membership Rewards card, you can buy miles indirectly at a cost of only 2.5 cents per mile (or less when transfer bonuses are in effect). The best airline programs for these indirect mileage purchases, in my opinion, are: ...

Buy miles via ThankYou Rewards

In general I don't recommend purchasing airline miles, even at a discount, but if you have an immediate need for miles for a high value award, it can make sense. If you have a Citi Premier or Citi Prestige card and a few ThankYou points in your account, you can buy miles indirectly through the ThankYou Rewards program at a cost of only 2.5 cents per mile (or less when transfer bonuses are in effect). The best airline programs for these indirect mileage purchases, in my opinion, are: Air France, Cathay Pacific, Singapore, and Virgin Atlantic.
