How to Use the Best Offers Table

Tips for using the updated Best Offers table (table ID 10)

The table includes fully formatted credit card information in a single column, a keyword column for filtering, and a few columns that can be useful for sorting when you list more than one card.

Which Display Type to Use?

We have card displays that focus on the signup offer, and other displays that only show card info without the signup offer.

  • If writing about offers: Use a signup offer display
  • If writing about how to get points/miles: Use a signup offer display
  • If writing about card benefits, earning rate on spend, etc: Us a card info display

Replace parentheses with square brackets

Important: In the examples that follow, you’ll have to replace the parentheses ( ) with square brackets [ ] to make the code work in your post.

Filtering

The Keywords column in the tablepress table includes a really weird string of information that is useful for filtering.  For example, the Ink Cash keywords column currently looks like this:

keyword_Chase_UR keyword_BestOfferY keyword_Transferable  keyword_BusinessCardY keyword_UniqueID_CIC_ qIDCICqBOYqNWKVisaqBIZYesqRWDTYPEURqBANKChaseqBOYqRWDChase Ultimate RewardsqSUBNWKSignature BusinessqBOYq

The old style of storing keywords is still there and is like this: keyword_UniqueID_CIC_

The new style is a string of keywords with lower case q as a separator:

qIDCICqBOYqNWKVisaqBIZYesqRWDTYPEURqBANKChaseqBOYqRWDChase Ultimate RewardsqSUBNWKSignature BusinessqBOYq

Tablepress doesn’t let you combine “or” and “and” logic in the same filter, so I tried to create the keyword string in a way that lets us get around that.  First, here are explanations of pieces of the above string:

  • qBOYq = Best Offer Yes
  • qIDCICq = ID CIC (Chase Ink Cash). Used to uniquely identify a single card.
  • qNWKVisaq = Network Visa (Can be Amex, Visa, Mastercard, or Discover)
  • qBIZYesq = Yes, this is a business card
  • qRWDTYPEURq = Reward Type is Ultimate Rewards (UR)
  • qBANKChaseq = card is issued by Chase
  • qRWDChase Ultimate Rewardsq = Specific Reward is Chase Ultimate Rewards (this makes more sense when looking at hotel or airline cards where RWDTYPE = airline, RWD = United MileagePlus (for example)
  • qSUBNWKSignature Businessq = Network sub-type.  e.g. values may be Signature, Signature Business, Infinite (as in Visa Infinite), World Elite (as in World Elite Mastercard), etc.

When coming up with new filters for your needs, it’s a good idea to open the Tablepress 10 table and look at the keyword column values for the cards you want to include in your post.  Perhaps copy and paste the contents to notepad, for example, until you get it working.

Filter AND, OR

If you want to include multiple filters in one display, you can do so with the operators: || or &&.  You can’t use both at once.

Suppose you want to include the Ink Cash and the Ink Cash Unlimited in the same display.  You can use the OR operator ||, as follows:

(table id=10 show_columns=”24″ filter=”qIDCICq||qIDCIBUq”)

Card Info Name and Link Only (no offer)

Suppose you want to show all ultimate rewards cards that are business cards.  You can do so with the AND operator && (meaning both of these things must be true) as follows:

(table id=10 show_columns=”24″ filter=”qRWDTYPEURq&&qBIZYesq”)

Card Info Name and Link Only (no offer)

Notice that the Ink Plus is in the above display.  If you want to also filter to cards that are considered a current best offer (qBOYq) you could eliminate the Ink Plus card from the display.  But you can’t use && and || in the same filter.  That’s why the qBOYq filter is included in the filter string in multiple places.  So, you can do this instead:

(table id=10 show_columns=”24″ filter=”qRWDTYPEURqBANKChaseqBOYq&&qBIZYesq”)

Card Info Name and Link Only (no offer)

The above works because qBOYq is close enough to qRWDTYPEURq (with only qBANKChaseq between them) so that we can include that entire substring without changing what we’re trying to do.  In fact, you don’t really need the && operator at all since qBIZYesq is also next to that info:

(table id=10 show_columns=”24″ filter=”qBIZYesqRWDTYPEURqBANKChaseqBOYq”)

Card Info Name and Link Only (no offer)

Sorting

Even though tablepress uses column numbers to indicate which columns to show or hide, it uses column letter names to indicate which column to use for sorting.

Useful sort columns are:

  • C: First Year Value
  • D: Card name
  • F: Bank
  • G: Bank & Card Name

Chase Business Cards sorted by first year value, descending:

(table id=10 show_columns=”19″ filter=”qBIZYesq&&qBANKChaseqBOYq” row_order=”sort” row_order_sort_column=”C” row_order_sort_direction=”DESC”)

Handling Long Card Lists

Sometimes you may want to display a pretty long list of cards, but you don’t want the list to take up too much vertical space.  For example, if you’re writing about Membership Rewards, you might want to list all of the cards with Membership Rewards signup offers.  That would get really big.

The best solution is to use built-in “datatables” functionality.  Add this to the code that you use to display a list of cards:

show_rows=”1″ table_head=true use_datatables=true datatables_sort=false

For example, this shows the best consumer card offers sorted by best first year value and lets the user page 10 at a time or expand how many are shown:

(table id=10 show_rows=”1″ table_head=true use_datatables=true datatables_sort=false show_columns=”22″ filter=”qBOYq&&qBIZNoq” row_order=”sort” row_order_sort_column=”C” row_order_sort_direction=”DESC”)

Another solution is to wrap your tablepress code in a special “<div>” code, as follows:

Let’s say we want to display all Membership Rewards card offers.  Normally we might use this code:

(table id=10 show_columns=”19″ filter=”qRWDTYPEMRqBANKAmexqBOYq” row_order=”sort” row_order_sort_column=”C” row_order_sort_direction=”DESC”)

But the above would create a very long list of card offers.  So, we can view the post in Text / HTML view and add the following <div> “wrapper”:

<div style=”max-height: 340px; overflow-y: auto;”>
(table id=10 show_columns=”19″ filter=”qRWDTYPEMRqBANKAmexqBOYq” row_order=”sort” row_order_sort_column=”C” row_order_sort_direction=”DESC”)
</div>

Card Offer
NOTE: DO NOT USE qRWDTYPE to filter to MR, UR, etc anymore

The above code puts the list of offers into a scrollable box.  The box height is dictated by the “max-height: 340px;” piece.  You can change the number of vertical pixels simply by changing the 340px to something else.

Wrap Up

Use the techniques and samples above to display credit card information in your posts.  If the keyword string doesn’t meet your needs, let Greg know.  It’s very easy to add additional info to that string.

Important: In all of the examples above, you’ll have to replace the parentheses ( ) with square brackets [ ] to make the code work in your post.
