Better Hyatt offer still available via referral

6

There is a new offer out today on the Chase World of Hyatt credit card. It stinks. Fortunately, the friend referral offer still has the better “old” terms. We have therefore updated our Best Offers page and our dedicated World of Hyatt Credit Card page with the refer-a-friend offer as we always list the best publicly-available offer, even when it means not sharing an offer for which we have an affiliate link.

Comparison with the “new” offer

The new offer that you may see if you go directly to the Chase site is structured very poorly. That new offer amounts to:

  • 30K points after $3K in purchases in the first 3 months
  • 2x on purchases that ordinarily earn 1x on up to $15K in purchases in the first 6 months
  • Total bonus = 45K points after $15K spend (30K from the early spend bonus and 15K additional points from $15K in purchases in the first 6 months)
  • Total points earned from $15K spend in first 6 months = 60K points (30K early spend bonus, 30K at 1x on $15K in purchases, and 15K bonus points from $15K in purchases)

That offer features fewer extra bonus points and requires more spend than the previous offer, which is still available via referral. That referral offer includes 50K bonus points on only $6K in purchases structured this way:

  • 25K points after $3K in purchases in the first 3 months
  • 25K additional points after $6K in total purchases in the first 6 months
  • Total bonus = 50K points after $6K spend
  • Total points earned from $15K spend in first 6 months = 65K points (50K points from spending bonuses + 15K from spending $15K)

As you can see, the old referral offer includes more bonus points and you’ll come out farther ahead after spending the same amount of money. Furthermore, you won’t be pressed to spend that full $15K in the next 6 months since just $6K will unlock the full bonus. You could then choose to spend at your leisure for the rest of the year.

To be clear, almost anyone who has this card wants to spend $15K on the card in a calendar year. That’s because in addition to the Category 1-4 free night certificate that cardholders receive at each anniversary, you’ll earn another Category 1-4 free night certificate with $15K spend in a calendar year. You’ll further earn 2 elite nights for each $5K spend on the card. It’s clearly worth spending $15K on the card, but with the friend referral offer you are not forced into a 6-month timeline for that spend and you’ll come out with more total points (and an opportunity to wait for the right time to do that extra spend to take advantage of any future spending bonus opportunities.

As noted at the top, we make an effort to always list the best publicly-available offer even when it means not listing our own affiliate links. We have therefore listed the World of Hyatt refer-a-friend offer and will continue to list a Hyatt referral offer as long as that offer remains better. Of course, we do not know whether or how long the referral offer will maintain the better offer – so if you had this card on your radar, you’ll want to make a move sooner rather than later.

You can find your own friend referral link via the Chase site here. Referral links posted in the comments get caught up in our spam filter and will not post.

– is there a way I can refer (2 player mode) myself from my wife to a card I don’t have? It seems like I can’t refer myself to say the Hyatt card from my wifes account anymore although I see many historical posts that suggest I should be able to.

I think the “special” offer may even be a little worse than you calculated since any spend on your Hyatt card at Hyatt hotels does not earn the extra 1pt per dollar, correct?

So anyone spending, say, $1K out of the $15K at Hyatts will come out a further 1K pts behind on the new offer.

Oops you linked the publicly available United Explorer Card offer and not the Hyatt one.

Are you sure you’re not seeing an advertisement for the United card inserted into the post?
