(EXPIRED) Delta award flash sale from 5K each way (includes popular events like SXSW, Sundance, etc)

The hits keep right on coming with Delta flash sales lately, with this week’s sale having a number of routes on sale for less than 10K each way. Most of the options this week are relatively short routes, but there are some gems like Austin to Seattle (or vice versa) for 7K each way plus $5.60 in tax.

Quick Thoughts

Most of the routes in this week’s sale are shorter regional flights that aren’t terribly expensive. That said, if you’ve got a pile of SkyMiles, you can certainly get reasonable value with this sale and availability is pretty good. For example, here’s a look at Austin to Seattle in January:

Even at 8500 miles, that looks like a great deal compared to the traditional 12,500-mile level for domestic one-ways with the major carriers. The sale notes that it runs through March 7th, though I even see flights for less than 12K beyond that date. I’m particularly surprised to see the 7K pricing leading right up to the start of the South by Southwest Festival (which starts on March 8th next year).

I’m similarly surprised to see San Francisco to Salt Lake City before, during, and after the Sundance Film Festival (a personal bucket list item someday) for 7K.

There are plenty of other good deals. A few other examples:

• Boston to Kansas City for 6K
• Charlotte to Detroit for 7.5K
• Hartford to Minneapolis for 8.5K
• New York to Pittsburgh for 6K

Remember that Delta is an Amex Transfer Partner, so if you’re a few SkyMiles short you can transfer them over. Maybe this should have been strength #6 that Membership Rewards has over Ultimate Rewards: cheap award flights via Delta flash sales . . .
