Quick Thoughts
I’ve not been tempted by the Delta credit cards in the past, but I am starting to warm up to them. The reason for that is two-fold.
First, I have more of an eye toward domestic travel than international over at least the next year given the constantly-changing protocols for international travel. Delta miles tend to be most valuable for flying on Delta whether that be taking advantage of flash sales or for general domestic flights. While we’ve long been Southwest loyalists thanks to the Companion Pass, there are more and more times where Delta miles might make more sense for domestic trips given Delta’s highly variable pricing.
The second reason I am suddenly more interested in Delta credit cards is because I now have Delta Gold status through January 2023 and a decent jump on requalifying in 2022. If I switch focus toward flying Delta for my domestic trips, and especially if Delta continues offering big bonuses for flying on their flights, I could see a fairly easy path to Platinum in 2022 given the rollover miles and the big MQMs bonuses possible with the Reserve cards. I imagine others may be in a similar situation.
While none of the Delta credit cards are particularly rewarding for everyday spend, spend on any of them can count toward an MQD waiver. As a reminder, that requires $25K spend in a calendar year for an MQD waiver for up to Platinum status (you’d need to spend $250K for an MQD waiver for Diamond status).
That said, I may wait around and hope to see another similar offer in 2022 so that I can work toward that 2022 MQD waiver while working on the spend for the welcome bonus. On the other hand, though we’ve now seen the 20K MQM bonuses on the Reserve cards a couple of times, I’m not sure it’s worth gambling on their return. We’ll see.
Overall, these bonuses are quite strong. Delta miles are typically worth more than 1c each toward Delta domestic economy class airfare, so you’re looking at bonuses that can be worth north of $1K in Delta flights with these offers. I typically prefer earning a transferable currency and using my miles for international premium cabin trips on partner airlines, but in an era where more of my travel is likely to be domestic than international, these offers are more appealing than they once were.
