FoundersCard sent an email today advertising a new benefit: a 20% discount off of the best flexible rate at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts. While I didn’t find the discount quite that good in all of my sample searches, it certainly did look good in at least some instances. If you’re a regular at Intercontinental hotels and you don’t have access to some sort of corporate discount program, it looks like this could probably save you some money.

The Deal

  • FoundersCard is now offering a 20% discount at InterContinental Hotels & Resorts (just InterContinental-branded properties)

Quick Thoughts

FoundersCard is a membership card that offers discounts, elite status, status fast-tracks, and other similar benefits aimed at small business owners. I am currently in the midst of a free trial and I provided an initial look here: Is FoundersCard worth the price? How are the free trial benefits?

It looks like this discount only applies to InterContinental-branded hotels and resorts, but it appears that all InterContinental properties are included. The first property I searched was the InterContinental at Minneapolis-St. Paul airport as I stayed there a couple of years ago and my son loved watching planes take off and land from our room window. I’m not really an “AvGeek”, but this was fun and I’d stay again.

Sure enough, the discount there looked pretty good even in comparison to the AAA rate (which is also better than the “Best Flexible Rate”). You would indeed save about 20% here over the best flexible rate.

In other cases, while the FoundersCard discount did take a chunk off of the rate IHG labels as “Best Flexible”, it wasn’t necessarily better than the best possible rate. For example, I looked up the InterContinental in the Maldives and while the FoundersCard rate was indeed better than what the hotel lists as the “Best Flexible Rate”, it wasn’t better than the “Book Now, Pay Later” rate for IHG members.

It isn’t immediately clear to me what the difference is between the FoundersCard LLC rate and FoundersCard LLC Gold. At the Minneapolis property, the “Gold” rate was a little better. At the Maldives property, the Gold rate was higher but included free cancellation until 6pm on the day of arrival (I picked a random date in November as an example). Considering that we sometimes see cancellation policies with lead times as much as 30 days or more at some Marriott properties, getting 6pm cancellation the day of arrival at a property in the Maldives seems notable (not in the sense that I’m interested in paying the cash rate in that case but rather than the FoundersCard rate may be useful in other instances if it enhances flexibility).

I only tested the FoundersCard rate in a few places, but it came up better than the AAA rate in each of the few I checked. As to whether or not it beats other rates you may have available, YMMV. For more on FoundersCard, see this post. Note that I am able to access this discount with my current free trial membership.

I signed up for a free trial to checkout the IHG discount. For the one hotel and date that I wanted, it gave a ~ $10 discount on a $400 room. Meh

Paul

If you have one of the offers for intercontinental on Amex (often 20%) and then if lucky another 10% on rakuten, this would be a lot of saving 😛

Leo

There is also 20% off at Regent, Indigo and Kimpton hotels.
