Update: Reader Yoni notes that HBO Max is currently running a special for 40% off of the cost of an annual subscription until 10/30/22, bringing the ads-free cost down to $104.99. This is undoubtedly the way to use this offer and an even better deal.
Have you been waiting for just the right moment to binge House of Dragons? Now could be the time.
There’s a new, widely-targeted Amex Offer out today that’s good for $50 back on $99.99+ for an annual HBO Max subscription. That drops the monthly average price down to about $4.16 per month, which certainly makes it appealing. This is part of Amex’s “Member Week” promotions and is only good for enrollments made by 10/14/22 (and purchases made by 10/20/22).
The Deal
- There is a new, targeted Amex Offer that’s good for $50 back when you spend $99.99 or more on an HBO Max annual subscription
Key Terms
- Enroll by 10/14/22, purchase must be made by 10/20/22
- Valid for annual subscription purchases
- Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after 10/20/2022, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase
- Subscription will be set to auto-renew
- Purchases may not qualify if not billed directly by the merchant (for instance, if you sign up via the Google Play store rather than directly through hbomax.com)
Quick Thoughts
HBO Max has two tiers — $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year with ads or $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year without ads. When I subscribed earlier this year using another Amex offer, I tried the plan with ads just to see how intrusive it was (and thinking that I would probably upgrade later). We barely even notice the ads, as they rarely interrupt a show, but are almost always just a short blurb right beforehand.
Note that it is possible to get HBO Max for $1.98/mo by using an Amex Platinum streaming credit in conjunction with Hulu. However, if I was going that route already, I would probably still do this Amex offer and change what I was using my streaming credit for. The net savings annually is only $25-75 and I know that I can get much more value for my $240 streaming credit than that.
According to cashbackmonitor.com, MyPoints.com is offering about $18 back with a subscription and there are other portals offering good rates as well, so it’s worth clicking through one of them to see if it will track, possible reducing the out-of-pocket cost even further.
Rakuten offering $16 cash back for ad-free annual subscription. combine that with amex $50 off and that brings cost down to $39 (105 – 50 – 16) or $3.25/ month excluding tax.
Is there a way to use this offer if my annual renewal for HBO is not until November 7?
I’m in a similar situation. I think mine is Nov 4.
Slightly different situation… my HBOMax just renewed a couple of months ago. Can I be proactive and pay for my next year now?
I have not seen a way to do that. Let us know if you find out a way to do so.
The $99 is with Ads – till 10.30.2022 they are running a deal on the website for ad free for 12 months for $104.99
I despise ads – I had been doing the Hulu/HBO deal with Amex for House of Dragons but stop watching normal Hulu because the Ads were annoying the hell out of me.
