There are currently some phenomenal fares available on Air Canada for round trip economy class travel to Hong Kong that includes seat selection and a checked bag, with flights from the West Coast from $341 and from the East Coast from $354 and cities in the middle of the country (like Chicago or Houston) for twenty or thirty bucks more. Those are terrific fares. I’ve flown Air Canada round trip from New York to Hong Kong in economy class. On my return flight from Hong Kong to Toronto, my in-flight entertainment system didn’t work at all…and yet I lived to tell the tale. It doesn’t get much cheaper than this to visit Hong Kong.

The Deal

  • Cheap flights to Hong Kong from several US cities from around $350 round trip (see links to Google Flights and Momondo below)

Key Details

  • Availability from the East Coast, West Coast, Chicago, and Houston (and possibly more)
  • Best fares mostly on Sunday-Wednesday departures in each direction
  • Availability mostly in April-May and September-November
  • Fares should include a checked bag and seat assignment (but be sure to check the details before you book)

Quick Thoughts

These fares are excellent from either coast. Don’t expect the most ideal routings and you won’t be disappointed. For example, here is a look at some options on one set of dates in May 2019 — you’ll see that you can choose between 2 stops getting there is about 22.5 hours or making 1 stop and taking as long as 35 hours to get to Hong Kong.

Still, the price is right – and in some situations, it might be preferable to break up the journey. Traveling with a baby, I’ve come to realize that an overnight layover en route is not always less desirable than a direct flight.

Prices from the West Coast look more or less the same via Google Flights.

Though you can alternatively go through airfare metasearch site Momondo and find some smaller online travel agencies selling those fares from around $340.

Hong Kong for ~$350 RT from many US cities

It’s easy to use Google Flights to search for cheap availability and then plug in your dates elsewhere if you’d like to book via a specific channel.

Since the ~$350 prices are available via major online travel agencies, you should also be able to book via credit card portals from less than 24,000 points round trip depending on which card(s) you hold. For example, a fare of $354 should cost about 23,600 Ultimate Rewards points for Sapphire Reserve holders (or about 28,320 points for Sapphire Preferred or Ink Business Preferred holders). That’s less than the typical cost of a round trip domestic US economy class round trip with most major award programs.

Availability is mostly Sunday-Wednesdays in April, May, and September-November.

If you’ve been looking for a deal to get to Asia, it doesn’t get much cheaper than this. Keep in mind that most major US-based OTAs offer at least 24 hours to cancel without penalty (and some are a bit more generous yet, offering free cancellation until ~11pm the night after booking). If you’re interested, I’d recommend booking ASAP. Just don’t forget to cancel if you can’t make it work.
