Hotels.com Amex Offer for prepaid hotels: Get 10% back on up to $1K spend; stack with other Amex Offer

There’s a new, targeted Amex Offer for Hotels.com that’s giving 10% back on up to $1,000 spent on prepaid stays.

The Deal

• Get 10% back as a statement credit on prepaid hotel bookings at Hotels.com with a targeted Amex Offer.

• Offer valid for pre-paid hotel purchases made online through the hotels.com/amex link using the pre-paid option at checkout (“pay now”) only.
• Excludes “pay at property” purchases and purchases made over the phone.
• Excludes all other purchases not made at hotels.com/amex link using the pre-paid option at checkout.
• Use of third party cashback offers, promotion codes, coupons, or browser extensions will invalidate this offer.
• Excludes gift cards, groups & meetings, vacation rentals/packages, and car rentals.
• American Express identifies qualifying transactions based on information provided by the participating merchant.

Quick Thoughts

The terms state that you have to book stays at hotels.com/amex. With similar Amex Offers for Expedia, I believe that requirement has been enforced, but please let us know in the comments if that doesn’t end up being the case with this Amex Offer.

It might still be possible to earn shopping portal rewards with this offer, but I’m not certain about either of the following options. One option that might work is to click through to Hotels.com from a portal, then change the URL in the address bar to hotels.com/amex.

Another option would be to go directly to hotels.com/amex and use a shopping portal’s browser extension. However, be aware that the terms of the Amex Offer specifically exclude the use of browser extensions; whether that’s actually enforced though is another matter.

Be sure to book a prepaid rate as rates where you pay at the hotel won’t trigger the Amex Offer. There might be rates that still offer some kind of flexibility/refundability despite being a prepaid rate, but that’ll likely differ from property to property.

A different Hotels.com Amex Offer showed up for targeted cardholders a few months ago. That one awards 10X bonus Membership Rewards points on Hotels.com reservations, also on up to $1,000 of spend. If you were targeted for both of these offers on the same card, that’d be awesome as you’d then be able to get both the 10% statement credit as well as 10X Membership Rewards, on top of the card’s regular earnings.
