Quick Thoughts
Saving 20% on a Hotels.com gift card is a decent deal. However, be aware that they recently destroyed their rewards program and now only offer 2% back rather than an effective 10% like they used to. That makes Hotels.com far less enticing to book with, but saving 20% on the gift card, 2% back in OneKey Cash and rewards from booking through a shopping portal could still be worthwhile.
Hotels.com only lets you redeem one gift card per booking and it can’t be used in conjunction with a promo code – it’s either/or rather than both/and. Although you can only redeem one gift card per booking, they do allow you to merge gift cards to create a card with a higher balance than it started out with. When doing this, be aware that you can’t merge a card to another card that’s already had a card merged to it, but you should be able to merge several cards to the same card.
Another quirk to be aware of is that not every hotel listed on Hotels.com can be paid for with gift cards. There seem to be some properties that opt out of customers being able to use promo codes, gift cards and rewards, but the vast majority of hotels should be bookable when using a gift card.
Are these easy to use?
And can they be used outside the US?
Provided you’re using the US Hotels.com website to book the property that’s overseas, yes you can.
Yes, you just entering the card details when checking out.
Good luck with Cashstar… Without fail, they immediately cancel every hotels . com gift card purchase I try to make.
You CAN merge a card to another card that’s already had a card merged to it, I’ve done it about 10 times. You can’t do it online, you have to call their support number which is hard to find on their web site. 888-999-4468. And you have to provide them with the source and original amount of all the gift cards you are trying to merge. They don’t make it easy but it can be done.
