American Express is offering a 30% bonus when transferring Membership Rewards to Hilton Honors. Seeing as they usually transfer on a 1,000:2,000 basis, that increases the ratio to 1,000:2,600.
The Deal
- Transfer Membership Rewards to Hilton Honors on an increased 1,000:2,600 basis, or
- Transfer Membership Rewards to Hilton Honors on an increased 1,000:3,000 basis.
Key Terms
- Expires November 30, 2018.
Quick Thoughts
You usually get better value by transferring Membership Rewards to airlines, but getting 2,600 Hilton Honors points for every 1,000 MR can be worth considering if you have a specific redemption in mind.
For example, a few months ago we published a list of Hilton properties in the US that only cost 10,000 points per night. A free night at one of those properties could therefore be paid for by transferring 4,000 points. Even better, Hilton offers the 5th night free on award stays for anyone that has at least Silver status. That means a five night stay can be had for as few as 16,000 Membership Rewards.
That offers the potential for excellent value. For example, one of the hotels on that list is the Hampton Inn St Louis-Columbia in Illinois. The semi-flex rate for five nights in November comes to a total of $784.21 including tax. Paying for that stay using Hilton Honors points transferred from Membership Rewards with this transfer bonus would mean you’d be getting 4.90cpp of value from your Amex points.
And that’s just the US. There are several Hilton properties overseas that only cost 5,000 points per night. With this transfer bonus, a five night stay would only require 8,000 Membership Rewards.
One of those properties is the Hilton Sharm Waterfalls Resort in Egypt. A five night stay there in October would cost $588.00 versus 20,000 in points. That also works out at a 4.90cpp value for your Membership Rewards with this transfer bonus.
Not all Hilton redemptions will provide as good value as this, so run the numbers on potential stays before transferring any Membership Rewards over to your Hilton Honors account.
Edit: Based on some comments below, it looks like this is a targeted offer. Some people don’t have this offer on their account, while others have an even better offer of a 50% transfer bonus offering a 1,000:3,000 ratio.
[…] Transfer MR points to Hilton Honors with a 30-50% Bonus [Targeted] Ends November 30th. […]
[…] H/T: Frequent Miler […]
I got 10% bonus:
1000 MR points = 2,200 Hilton Honors Points
Must be targeted as opposed to a blanket-wide bonus for everyone because I don’t have that offer in my account. I only see the usual 1:2 ratio.
Thanks – I’ve updated the post to show that this is a targeted offer rather than being available to all cardholders.
I got a 50% bonus on mine – 1000 MR converts to 3000 Hilton.
Thank you – I’ve updated the post to include that.
