New Choice Hotels sweet spots: Booking suites at Radisson properties

In late July 2023, Choice Hotels finished incorporating former Radisson Rewards Americas properties into their portfolio which made it possible to book those Radisson properties with Choice Privileges points.

When doing some research, we found that the award pricing had converted over on a favorable basis overall. There was another benefit to this change too. Choice Privileges makes numerous room types bookable for the same number of points which often includes suites. That approach has continued with Radisson, so there are many Radisson brands where you can now book suites for a standard number of points.

I went through trying to identify as many properties as possible where you could book these suites; I’ve therefore produced the list below to display what I found. The list isn’t comprehensive; Radisson Rewards Americas had 600+ properties and so I haven’t been able to manually check every single hotel that’s part of their portfolio. However, I did check 100+ hotels during my searches and there are 60+ properties listed below.

It might also be the case that some of the hotels I checked don’t appear on this list as there weren’t any suites bookable during the dates I searched, but that they do have suites available at other times. If you find any others, please let us know in the comments below and I’ll get them added to the list.

I should also note that just because suites are bookable with points, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’ll provide you with great value. For the most part I didn’t check any cash rates, so it might be that paid stays would represent better value for a suite than redeeming points. Some of the suites are also more like junior suites rather than 1 bedroom suites with a door separating the bedroom and living room.

    • When doing my initial research a couple of weeks ago, I saw a 1 king bed suite with a whirlpool bookable with points. When checking again today I didn’t see that bookable with points on the couple of dates I checked, so it might be that Choice has pulled that availability, or perhaps that room type is only bookable with points on certain dates.

Not related to Radisson properties, but I noticed the Blue Angel Hotel in NYC started to charge destination fee on points stays. The fee wasn’t there for points stays in May. When you book in app, there is no disclosure on how much it is. I have stayed at this hotel and liked the convenient location near 53 & Lexington as well as the friendly staffs, but will probably avoid it going forward. They also started to charge $2 per bag for storing luggage which wasn’t there in May, but at least this fee is disclosed. It seems the Cambria hasn’t started charging these fees yet.

The Radisson Lackawanna Station is a cool converted train station in Scranton, PA. The whirlpool suite is bookable with 20k points.

Thank you! I’d checked this property when preparing this post but hadn’t seen a suite, so that must’ve been sold out on the date that I checked. I just checked a different date and saw this suite available, so I’ve added it to the post 🙂

I know Radisson had a big footprint in Europe; is this true there too? I see all of the options listed here are in the Americas. It would be especially helpful in Europe where hotel occupancy limits are strictly enforced

A year or two ago Radisson split their program in two – Radisson Rewards and Radisson Rewards Americas. The latter contained all their properties in North, Central & South America and that’s the part that Choice bought.

Radisson Rewards which contains all their other properties around the world is now completely separately run as its own program. They badly devalued their program last year, so there’s not much value there anymore.

R BLU Aruba seems specifically excluded as I have only seen the base room (1-BR suite) available using points. Was hoping this one would open to the larger suite categories post conversion, but unfortunately no love.

I was able to get a 2 queen whirlpool suite at Treasure Island for 20,000 points on a Saturday. I had previously booked a room before the merger for 45,000 Radisson. Cancelling the old room post merger was a bit cumbersome. It took 3 calls. You cannot cancel online and Choice couldn’t do it either, so Choice cancelled with the hotel on the line and then refunded me the choice points too. The award bookings show dollars instead of points which show an inflated tax amount.

Just a thought

Would’ve been super helpful to list current points price for the week days and weekends. And categorize them by country. Could you update the post when you have time?

I’d originally considered listing the current points price. However, Choice only lets you book up to 100 days in advance and they change award pricing seasonally which would mean this post would quickly look out of date when that pricing changes. I’ll update the post to break it down by country though.
