Publix has a couple of coupons at the moment that can offer you some decent savings on a Mastercard gift card and gas gift card when spending $50 or more on groceries. Even better, you can stack the two promotions within the same grocery shopping trip.

Quick Thoughts

As the terms for both of the deals state, you need to buy the gift cards at the same time as spending $50 or more on groceries, along with providing copies of the coupons. You don’t have to buy both types of gift cards though – you can buy one or the other if you prefer.

You’ll save 20% on the gas gift card and make a $5.05 profit on the Mastercard gift card once you take into account its $4.95 activation fee. This is therefore a great deal if you have a Publix store near you and their grocery prices aren’t significantly higher than other grocery stores in your area.

As always, be sure to pay with a credit card that earns more at grocery stores, such as the Amex Gold card that earns 4x Membership Rewards on up to $25,000 of grocery store spend each year.

Would buying a $40 frying pan plus $10 in groceries qualify for the gift card discount?

beachmouse

These used to be a pretty regular promotion before going quiet earlier in the year- yes, it’s the $50 denominations only. Stackable depends on the whim of the cashier and CS desk. Also, the CS desk in at least my store will let you buy a discounted gas card if you present them with a receipt for the $50 in purchases earlier that day and say ‘hey, I forgot to buy a gas card earlier; can I still get one?’ (I live in a town where credit card skimming at gas pumps is way too common so go prepaid gas card whenever feasible anyways)

Scott

The terms seem to pretty clearly state that these can’t be stacked, so you can’t get two $50 gift cards with one $50 grocery purchase. I don’t know if the registers will prevent this – does anyone have any experience?

Also, handling multiple purchases seems to vary from store to store and even cashier to cashier. Sometimes it’s possible to buy $100 in groceries and get two cards, sometimes one must make two separate $50 transactions, sometimes they strictly enforce the “one minimum purchase coupon per day” rule, regardless of how much you’re spending on groceries.

Scott

The exact wording on both coupons is, “Publix accepts only one minimum purchase coupon for every minimum grocery purchase, meaning minimum purchase coupons cannot be combined.” This seems pretty clear that you can get EITHER the gas card or Mastercard with a $50 purchase, but NOT BOTH.

As beachmouse later noted, and it’s been my experience as well, enforcement of this varies considerably. Fortunately, Publix is pretty ubiquitous in the areas they operate so it’s unlikely that anyone is going to be traveling a significant distance for this deal, but people may still want to manage expectations.

Does anybody have any experience trying to buy a $200 mastercard gift card with this? the language makes it sound like its only for the $50 denomination.
