Serve adds Rite Aid and Dollar General

Serve is a type of prepaid card that can be loaded via cash or debit card at a variety of retail locations. There are several “flavors” of Serve — you can read more about all of them here: Complete guide to the many flavors of Serve. Which is Best?. Unfortunately, reports from reddit indicate that an email has been sent out to Amex Serve ONE VIP holders advising them that the card is being discontinued. Those who already have the card will keep it, but they will stop taking new applications on January 1, 2018. If you’re interested in applying for an account, time is limited. Here’s the text of the email reported from Reddit:

Dear [user],

We are writing to notify you of a change coming to the American Express Serve® ONE VIP™ Program in 2018. As of January 1, 2018, we will no longer be accepting new ONE VIP Card Prepaid applications, but as a current ONE VIP Cardholder, we want to let you know that there will be no impact to your Serve Account.

Thank you for being a valued customer and we look forward to continuing to serve you.

The main advantage of the Serve ONE VIP account is that it remains free as long as you load at least $500 a month and it can be loaded online with an Amex credit card up to $1,000 per month. You can additionally get access to Amex Offers via Serve cards (I don’t have a One VIP, but my Green Serve has many of the more mainstream offers I see on other Amex cards).

It’s unfortunate to see this popular prepaid card’s demise, but it seems reasonable that this is part of the migration (See: Bluebird Migration: Is this the next or final chapter in Bluebird manufactured spend?). If Greg’s predictions hold true, this might be a last call at a no-fee/low-fee bird. For those who already have the card, it seems you’ll be grandfathered in. How long the card will last before being migrated to something different remains to be seen.

Does an application for the One VIP count against 5/24?

If I cancel my locked Bluebird and wife’s locked regular old serve can we sign up?

I thought you cannot load with cc with this type of Serve. And do you earn 1x MR points if you load it that way? And would it be considered cash advance?
