American Express launched a new Shop Small Amex Offer a couple of weeks ago. We’d already partly covered it here, but the Amex Connect link to the offer seems to be a little more restrictive than some other Amex Connect links because if you weren’t targeted for the offer, it wouldn’t let you add it.
It’s therefore worth keeping an eye out on your Amex Offers in case you did get targeted for this Shop Small deal.
The Deal
- Spend $10 at Shop Small retailers & get $5 back with a targeted Amex Offer.
Key Terms
- Expires August 22, 2021.
- A “qualifying purchase” means a purchase made at a business location on the Shop Small Map in the US or US territories available, at americanexpress.com/shopsmalloffer, or the Online Directory, available at americanexpress.com/shopsmallonline, with your enrolled Card or with Pay with Points linked to an enrolled Card on or before 8/22/2021 in accordance with these terms.
- The following do NOT count as a qualifying purchase: fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of traveler’s checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid Cards, purchases of any cash equivalents or purchases made in foreign currencies.
- You may not receive a statement credit if we receive inaccurate information or are otherwise unable to identify your purchase as qualified for the offer. For example, you may not receive the statement credit if (a) the merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services except that qualifying purchases made through Resy.com and the Resy mobile app will qualify for the offer; or (b) the merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers); or (c) you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet.
- Note that we may not receive information about your qualifying purchase from merchant until all items from your qualifying purchase have been provided/shipped by merchant.
- Statement credit may be reversed if qualifying purchase is returned/cancelled.
- If we do not receive information that identifies your transaction as qualifying for the offer, you will not receive the statement credit.
- Offers are available for varying and limited periods of time and are dynamic and personalized. If you navigate away from the Offers page, you may see different offers when you return.
- Offer is non-transferable.
- Limit of 2 statements credits (total of $10 back) per Card Member.
Quick Thoughts
When Amex ran Shop Small last summer, the corresponding Amex Offer seemed to be widely available and could be used up to 10 times for total savings of up to $50. For as generous as they’re being with offering up to 15x at Shop Small retailers with the current Amex Platinum card welcome bonus, they’re sadly not being as generous with this latest Amex Offer.
For starters, it seems like very few people have been targeted for it compared to last year. If you are lucky enough to get it on one of your cards, there’s a limit of two for a total of up to $10 savings rather than a limit of ten statement credits like last year.
The good news is that what qualifies as a small business seems to be as wide as last year. There’s obviously your standard small business options which you can find on the Shop Small map, but if for whatever reason you can’t max it out organically, buying a $10 gift card from Fluz also works. Other services like eGifter also worked last year and I believe the same applies this year too.
Don’t forget about 3rd party cards you may hold:

Did a stack of them.
