As reported by Gary Leff at View from the Wing, Singapore Airlines is having a great business class fare sale with round trip fares starting under $2,000. While the price is already terrific for long haul business class, this deal could be very attractive if you have an Amex Business Platinum and pay with points. Assuming you book a $2,000 fare, you would initially need to have 200,000 Membership Rewards points. You would get half the points back for a net cost of 100,000 Membership Rewards points. Furthermore, your flight would earn redeemable miles and elite qualifying miles. According to the fare rules posted at View from the Wing, these fares would need to be purchased by February 20th.
As Gary points out, you could also theoretically transfer points into Krisflyer to upgrade your business class ticket to first class, perhaps even flying Singapore Suites if you fly the New York to Frankfurt route. If you find saver upgrade space, that would be 37.5K miles one-way to upgrade to suites class. Personally, I think that’s crazy. That’s about 2/3 of the miles required to get a saver suites class award on that route. I think paying that many miles on top of a $2K paid business class ticket would be silly. I’d rather hold onto those miles and use them toward a future suites class trip. And that’s coming from someone who is still on a Singapore Suites Class high. I had my first-ever Singapore Suites class flight yesterday from Sydney to Singapore and loved it.

My first time in Suites Class was the opposite direction. Sydney to Singapore. Lots of saver space available on that route.
Err, Singapore to Sydney I mean.
