Greg’s post this morning about How to piece together an impossible award reminded me that Singapore Airlines released their monthly Spontaneous Escapes this week, and there are a couple of sweet redemption opportunities on the list, including
San Francisco to Hong Kong Update: (I had that backwards) Hong Kong to San Francisco for 62,300 KrisFlyer miles. The other US route on the list is Manchester to Houston in economy class for 24,150 miles. If you’ll be in Asia already, one that stands out as a great value is Singapore to Johanessburg, South Africa for 34,300 miles each way. That’s an amazing deal for a 10hr and 40mi flight on one of the best airlines in the world. Since Singapore is an Amex transfer partner, Chase transfer partner, Citi transfer partner, and Capital One transfer partner, it’s easy to put together the miles for an award ticket.
- Singapore Airlines has released its Spontaneous Escapes for booking by May 31, 2019 and travel between June 1, 2019 and June 30, 2019.

The flight from HKG to SFO is a good value that is on par with other good-value options for business class from Hong Kong. While you’re not necessarily getting the lowest mileage price for business class to Asia with this deal, you’re getting exceptional quality in terms of Singapore Airlines food, service, and seats. I’ve flown the route between San Francisco and Hong Kong in first class and when I took a peek back at business class, I commented that I’m not sure I’d pay for first class on that route again — the business class looked almost the same to me on the 777. I think it would be hard to be unhappy with your choice to fly that one.
Of course, you’ll need to either pay more miles or find a different way to get there since only Hong Kong-to-San Francisco is on sale (not the other way around). See Greg’s post this morning for ideas on the games you can play for that — though I’ve never really struggled to find ways between the US and Hong Kong. Of course, you could use this deal to put together a trip to Africa or Australia with some dot-connecting (and the chance to visit Singapore) in between.
That route from Singapore to Johannesburg looks like an absolute steal at the price. A quick look at flight stats shows that it is operated by an A350. Paying less than 35K each way for a 10hr+ flight in Singapore Business class in that situation seems terrific to me. If you’re looking to do a photo safari while you’re there, check out this post for an idea on camera equipment: Buy to rent: Enjoying travel gear without buyer’s remorse.
There are also sale prices between Singapore and multiple cities in New Zealand and Australia. At 43.4K miles each way in business class, those are also a great deal for long flights.
Whether or not this is a deal just depends on your travel plans. While most people won’t spontaneously head out to Asia or between Asia and Africa or Australia at the drop of a hat, Greg’s post this morning illustrated how thinking outside the box could get you to places you’d like to visit — and in this case, you might be able to get there for the beginning of summer break if your family is bound by the school schedule.
