Today through Saturday, May 13th, Staples is offering a $20 Visa Gift Card rebate on $300 or more in Visa Gift Cards. Staples gift card rebates are an easy win as you can earn 5x with a card like the Chase Ink Plus or Ink Cash and get a rebate worth more than the activation fee on the cards.
The Deal
- $20 Visa prepaid gift card by mail when purchasing $300 or more in Visa gift cards
Key Terms
- Valid 5/6/17 to 5/13/17
- In-store only
- Only one rebate per name/address/household
The Math
This week’s rebate is in the form of a prepaid Visa card by mail, which is PIN-enabled (the PIN is the last 4 digits).
To maximize rewards, you’ll want to buy two $200 gift cards. It will work out like this
Cost:
$413.90 (total cost for two $200 gift cards with activation fees)
Receive:
$420 in Visa gift cards ($400 now and $20 by rebate)+ 2,069.5 Ultimate Rewards
Conservatively valuing the Ultimate Rewards at 1.5 cents each (the rate at which they can be redeemed for travel if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve), the points are worth at least $31, but you may get quite a bit more value with transfer partners.
These cards should be PIN-enabled (the PIN should be the last 4 digits of the card). See our Complete Guide to Staples Visa & Mastercard gift card deals for more information
I have been buying gift card from Staples for a long time. Recently some how my card number was compromised. However, I caught the fraudulent transaction within two days. (Given the fact that I usually buy and leave it there for future use, I felt good that I was able to find it.). I called and opened dispute claim immediately.
Here comes the bad part. The process was painfully slow and few communications over a postal mail. Then about month and half later I simply got a mail that my claim was denied with out much reason as to why. I have the receipt, physical card and never tried use it anywhere. It is impossible to get hold of any one on the phone. I think the hold was designed some how. Still trying to get hold of someone let’s see..
Given how the customer support works for these gift cards, it may not be worth my time or risk.
Reports of lots of issues with cards not activating and no rebates being given even after submitting online rebate claim for legit $300 purchase. Their system is messed up. I still get “rebate qualification TBD”. Beware. Bad timing for this Mother’s Day promotion.

I got $20 gift card each for me and my husband. How come i could only charge $16 on each card?
Did you try using it in a restaurant where they would have pre-authorized your $16 + 20% for a potential tip? If so, you’re $4.00 is still on there, but it would take a business day or two for the pre-authorization to settle to the real charge. It’s best to use these cards are grocery stores, supermarkets and similar places that will not pre-authorize for more than what you’re actually charging.
NO, my bill was over $20. I just wanted to use that and pay the difference. But each time only $16 went through.
Just wait a few days and the extra $4 will go back on the card. If you use it at a restaurant, it gets preauthorized for an extra 20% to account for the tip. You can use these cards up at fast food restaurants without the 20% issue.
