American Express is targeting some existing Business Platinum cardholders with a great offer for opening an additional Business Platinum card which has no lifetime language.
The Deal
- Targeted Amex Business Platinum cardholders can earn 150,000 Membership Rewards points when opening a new Business Platinum card and spending $15,000 in the first three months of card membership.
Key Terms
- Application required by December 31, 2021.
Quick Thoughts
If you’re targeted for this offer and can manage the $15,000 minimum spend requirement within three months, this offer will be a no-brainer for most. It works out to be at least 11 Membership Rewards points per dollar on the first $15,000 of spend when taking into account the minimum 1x you’ll earn automatically on that spend.
That’s a fantastic return, especially seeing as this offer has no lifetime language:
It’s also notable that this offer is valid for applications through December 31, 2021. Provided Amex doesn’t modify or revoke the offer before then (as the subsequent terms state they can), it could be useful being able to delay applying for the card until later this year. That way you could apply to either take advantage of increased spending over the holidays and/or for tax payments at the end of the year or early in 2022. Applying at the end of the year also means you can triple dip the $200 per year in airline fee credits and quadruple dip the $100 twice-annual Dell credits.
This offer showed up when logging into an Amex account, but keep an eye on your inbox in case they send you an email with this offer too. My wife was targeted for a 100,000 Membership Rewards offer for adding a Business Platinum card a couple of months after getting her first Business Platinum card. That offer didn’t have any lifetime language either, although she has to apply by June 30, 2021 to take advantage of that particular offer, so be sure to check the terms if you’re targeted for an offer like one of these.
Also be sure to look for the lifetime language in the offer wording and print or screenshot it for your records just in case. The email my wife received from Amex stated (my bolding):
Welcome offer not available to applicants who have or have had this Card. We may also consider the number of American Express Cards you have opened and closed as well as other factors in making a decision on your welcome offer eligibility.
However, when clicking through to the application page and looking at the terms there, that lifetime language was nowhere to be seen.
The 150k offer only seems to be showing up when logging into your Amex account rather than being sent out via email like the 100k offer, but keep an eye out for lifetime language anyway.
If you’ve never had a Business Platinum card before and get targeted for one of these offers, you might be able to do even better if you have a Player 2. Referral links to the Business Platinum card sometimes display the 150k offer (especially when testing out different browser options), so using that referral link would get you the same 150k welcome bonus, but it’d also earn your P2 bonus points. This no lifetime language offer is more notable for people who’ve either had the card before or who still have one because that normally precludes you from getting another welcome bonus.
Any guesses on whether this targeted offer will allow me to circumvent the Amex popup (which I’m getting for all Amex apps now)? I’ll be sad to wait until December to apply only to get the popup as usual! But I’m wondering if something will be different with this — for example, my wife was able to get the BBP with a targeted offer when she logged in, despite getting the popup earlier in the day on apps for other amex cards.
Yes, I expect it would bypass the popup.
Awesome, thanks! I hope you’re right. 🙂
I received this offer on my Green Business account but alas, I’m in pop-up jail for the unknown future…
I got this in my account about a week ago (I’m an existing Business Platinum card holder) and it pops up the box when I login and also allows you to do it later from the Amex Offers area, so you don’t lose it if you didn’t jump on it right away. I waited a few days till I had time to review the language carefully (particularly the No-lifetime language). I also thought of perhaps waiting till year-end for the reasons you mentioned but it seemed like a good opportunity as it was, and not worth the risk (at least for me) of Amex revoking it later. I had some big organic spend coming up too (looking at you Mr. Taxman !). I can confirm that the approval was painless (even though i had one Business Platinum already) and also the new card shows the progress bar for the welcome offer on my online account now. This is right after another targeted no-life time Business Gold 90K offer just 2 weeks ago (also approved).
Curious fact: I also have a Blue Business registered to the same online account. That’s where I got this 150K offer. When I looked at my (original) Business Platinum account, it showed me an offer of 100K MR instead. I was careful to apply from the Blue Business Plus area. The 100K offer did disappear after I got approved for the 150K one, so its not like Amex doesn’t know it is the same user. But for some reason they weirdly showed a different offer for the same spend in the two different areas. Something to watch out for if you have multiple Amex cards in the same online account.
Exact same for me, offer shows up in Blue Buss card and not Plat Buss directly.
DP: I just want to confirm that both the 2nd Biz Platinum (higher offer when applying from the Blue Biz Plus area) and the Biz Gold bonus points were received immediately upon completing the minimum spend (so the no-lifetime language was in effect since I had both of these in the past). As usual Amex posts these opening (and other) bonuses in real time while the actual “regular” spending rewards get posted at the end of the statement period. So it’s all good.
I don’t get why Amex is targeting me for a second biz platinum card when I hardly use the first one I have?
Who knows, but it’s certainly no bad thing!
Is American Express good with someone applying for a card they currently hold?
Yes, they can be. If an offer has lifetime language, you can get that card again – you just won’t earn the benefits. If it doesn’t have lifetime language, you can get that bonus a second time.
Thank you Stephen. I am targeted for 150k and this will be my first time applying for platinum card. Can you please explain the player 2 concept? How do i get player 2 bonus?
If your partner has an Amex card, they can generate a referral from that card. They don’t have to refer you from a Business Platinum card – it can be any Amex. When using their referral link, you can change the card to apply for to the Business Platinum card. If you do that in incognito mode, you’ll hopefully have the 150k offer show up. You’ll then earn that bonus and they’ll earn the referral bonus from whichever card they referred you from in the first place.
Thank you so much
Appreciate it
I just got a personal platinum Amex for 100K MR bonus in early April. Last week I received a targeted offer for a personal platinum Amex, no lifetime language. Is it worth a shot applying for a second?
If you can manage the minimum spend requirement then it could be worth it depending on what the bonus is.
