American Express is apparently sending out targeted emails to select card members enticing them to apply for a personal Platinum card.
The offer comes with an RSVP code to apply. Typically, most Amex sign up offers exclude customers who have or have had the card in question. In other words, Amex sign up bonuses are usually limited to once-per-lifetime. Notably, this email offer does not have any once-in-a-lifetime language. At this point, we don’t know whether or not this is meaningful as we don’t have any data points with this particular offer. However, based on past targeted data points via mail, the absence of once-per-lifetime language usually indicates that the offer is not restricted. At least anecdotally, Amex seems to be increasing exceptions to the once-per-lifetime limitations. If you’re interesting in trying for it, keep your eye out for a targeted email. The subject line says, “Congratulations. You’re Selected to Apply for An Exclusive Offer.” or “Congratulations [First Name]! Get Exciting New Benefits with The Platinum Card® Membership.”
For those who like reading fine print, here is the fine print included:
Get new privileges, possibilities and perks you deserve — designed for your lifestyle. This offer expires June 10, 2017.

[…] Most Amex offers stipulate that you can’t get the bonus if you’ve ever had that card before. That said, it doesn’t preclude you getting a bonus for a similarly named card. For example, there at least six versions of the high end Platinum card, and it’s possible to get the signup bonus on each and every one. Additionally, targeted offers sometimes do not have that once per lifetime language. In those cases, you can get the bonus even if you’ve had the card before. See: Is Amex increasing exceptions to their Once Per Lifetime Rule? and Targeted personal Platinum offer w/o once in lifetime language. […]
I applied for Biz Gold targeted mail offer in Feb, without the lifetime language in terms. Got declined bonus points after spending $5000, citing the lifetime rule. I tried different CSR via chat or phone, telling them I still have the mail as proof. Finally one agreed to open an “investigation” which would give me an answer in 6-8 weeks. Still heard nothing so far although I am not optimistic. To me, this elimination of lifetime language is just Amex’s deceptive practice.

I got targeted. I have had several flavors of Amex plat in the past. I also have the biz version. The way I look at it, it would be worth $1,050 to sign up. I’d get $1,200 from the 60,000 points, plus 2x$200 airfare credit for the $550 annual fee. Not bad, but I guess I’d like some data points that the targeted offer really is free of the once per lifetime exception.
Nick, are there any new data about whether bus plat alone gets 4x on 50 percent points back airfare purchases or whether the business and personal play combo is reliable for 4x?
We should have a data point on whether it earns the 4x very soon. My statement cuts in a few days and I believe Greg’s does also and we both tried it. We expected that we would need to wait until the statement cut as this is now a category bonus (as opposed to the targeted bonus on which Greg first discovered this). We wll be sure to let you know :-).
The main appeal on this targeted Platinum offer is that you may be able to get the bonus again if you’ve had it before. I agree that 60k is not the most compelling bonus we’ve ever seen — but if you’ve had the card before, it’s better than 0. I can’t definitely say whether or not you can get the bonus a second time with this offer, but the fact that the 1x-per-lifetime language is missing seems like a good sign. No harm is waiting for data points though — the offer doesn’t expire until June. It’s likely that someone will have a data point by then.
Just returning to say that I received this targeted offer and received the 60,000 bonus points even though I’ve had the card before. Points posted two days after meeting the spend, even before statement close.
They sent me two emails asking me to sign up. I’m not interested in a platinum or gold until they offer the 50% point refund they give to the business platinum. What are the chances this gets added to the personal? I know I can apply for the business version but I won’t hit the $10k in 3 months signup bonus.
[…] HT: Frequentmiler […]
I just received an email for the Biz Plat with the language. I currently have the card, so I have no idea why the ysent this to me.
1 Welcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product.

Alternate subject line for same offer: “Congratulations [FirstName]! Get Exciting New Benefits with The Platinum Card® Membership”
Thanks, Ed! We actually knew that there were two versions and I typed it up quickly and forgot to include that. Thanks for reminding me so I could fix it!
