There are a lot of reasons that people travel at non-ideal times. Holidays, work, school calendars, fare-sales, etc. For some people, off-season travel affords the opportunity for less crowds, cheaper hotels and unexpected discoveries.
I’ve had some incredible experiences travelling in the off-season. A morning in Kyoto in January immediately comes to mind. I’d been fighting wind and slightly above-freezing rain for three days trying to explore the city. Waking up before sunrise on my last morning, I found the rain had turned to giant, soft snowflakes. I spent the next several hours exploring the historic district of Higashiyama in a snow globe. I was completely by myself amongst the shrines, temples and gardens, the snow muffling any sound except for the distant chanting of monks and click of wooden water features. It’s a day that I’ll never forget and one that seared a love of Japan into my bones. Low-season has its merits.

That said, I’d never suggest that someone visit Japan for the first time in January (unless they’re planning to ski). Much of the country is cold, dark, rainy and windy, often making exploration difficult. Are there still treasures to be found? Absolutely…and it’s still an enchanting country. However, there’s simply more comfortable times of year to be there.
But which times are those?
Why we built this table
My wife is a college professor and much of our travel availability is based around the summer and school breaks. Unfortunately, much of the world is hot, crowded or rainy during our North American summer, and her spring and winter breaks can be an awkward time as well. Because of that, I’ve been wanting a summary of the “best” times of year to visit the various parts of the world. There are many opinions and resources out there, but there’s not a lot of good references that can be easily paged through and sorted by both geographical area and month. That’s what we’re aiming to build here.
We put a lot of effort towards helping our readers earn points and miles. At the same time, we also want to show the best ways to redeem those points and miles once they have them by spotlighting opportunities to get outsized value or grab hard to find hotels and award flights. We hope that this table will be another resource to help folks strategize and build imagination for the many ways that points and miles can enrich their travel.
“Best” should not be read as “the only time that people will enjoy.”
Any “best” list is, by nature, subjective…to some degree, this table is as well. Everyone has different goals and preferences when they travel and nice weather or lower crowds might not be high on that list. Look at the recommendations below as a starting point to planning, as opposed to being an admonition to not travel to a given country or region outside of the indicated months. I’m sure there will be some who disagree with some of the recommendations (“I love Saudi Arabia in the summer!”). As always, we’d love to hear any input folks might have.

Methodology
In order to make this table, we cross-referenced best time of year travel recommendations from: Lonely Planet, Rough Guides, Bradt, Fodor’s and Travel + Leisure, mixing in regional travel sites where appropriate. The goal was to find months of overlapping agreement between all of these “authorities,” prioritizing optimal weather and moderate crowds. This isn’t always possible and it certainly isn’t complete. For example, October is a great time to visit much of China, but not “Golden Week,” the first-ish week of the month when almost the whole country is on vacation at the same time.
There’s currently 270 entries here and we hope to grow that over time to try and capture as much specificity as possible. Many countries have different regions with varying optimal times to visit depending on elevation, latitude, exposure to oceanic effects and so on. We’d like to be able to continue to refine this guide accordingly. We also hope to eventually add an interactive map that shows options for award-booking as well.
Table of the “best” times to visit every country in the world
This table can be searched by region or country by entering the name into the search box. It can then be sorted by month by simply clicking the up/down arrows. Alternatively, you can start by choosing the month and scrolling down (but it will be a long list). The default display is 10 results at a time, but that can be changed to 25, 50 or 100. There is a scroll bar at the bottom that allows for viewing every month of the year (mobile users can scroll left to right by touch).
*A country’s inclusion on this list doesn’t mean we think right now is an appropriate time for tourists to go there. Please use good judgment and check travel advisories before heading out.

Awesome resource!
*Philippines. One ‘l’ two ‘p’ no ‘the’
how do i save it for future use? when i scroll right to see the end of the year months, the first column disappears so you don’t know what country you are looking at. thinking if I can save it in what format? to utilize. i am on a pc not cell phone. thanks
Yes and I would like to know how to save it on an iPhone. Thank you
Would also like to know how to save the table to my PC. thanks. Amazing information and greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
I love this table! I notice that July and August are seldom considered good times to travel anywhere. I am not fond of summer travel and was glad to see this; however, I do understand that this is the only time many can travel.
Great guide and great effort from Tim. My quick takeaway from this (~130+ of the entries listed this month) and personal experience is that September is often a great month to travel, at least in the Northern Hemisphere and outside of hurricane zone – weather is usually warm but not hot, days are reasonably long, crowds have died down with kids back in school.
*Colombia-Amazon 😉
I use https://weatherspark.com/ to compare destinations a lot to plan my travel as I hate heat
Tim, well-written imagery to put “best” in perspective! One thing though, the chart isn’t usable on mobile currently (on Android anyway). Columns are cut off and not scrollable. Probably an easy fix out there somewhere.
Thanks for the resource!
Weird, thanks for letting us know, we’ll look into it.
Looks to be working now, maybe someone on the team flipped a switch. Thanks Tim!
Great! Glad to hear it.
Sorry guys but traveling to Mauritius between June and November is not the best period, it would be between October and March. And traveling to Reunion, Mauritius’ sister island, should be at the exact same period as Mauritius and Reunion have the same climate, whereas you mention that between Jan and March is best. That makes me doubt the accuracy of your table for other destinations…
Fair enough. Again, we didn’t provide much, if any, editorial input here. It’s simply well-known travel guides data and summarizing where it overlaps.
Also, I did doublecheck Mauritius/Reunion, as you’re right that it should be effectively the same season. When I search I see that they’re both May-December. Perhaps you were looking at another entry?
Believe me, I lived in both islands for 10 years, that’s why I dared the comment. From March to May-June, there is a higher risk of cyclones, and from June to October, it is rainy season.
heard of champion traveler?
wow! thanks for the effort–always want to have a reference table like this and sometimes I get conflicting info
Tim
Excellent list. Love the search feature. Very useful
Nice reference, thanks!
Love the list, but it seems heavily biased against anything in winter, unless it’s a tropical destination. Some people like snowy destinations in the winter, even without skiiing. Switzerland and Austria for example, both known for majestic, snow capped mountains, and but no winter months are marked as ‘best’?
Or Germany and other central European countries for Christmas markets in Nov-Dec. Winter months are also low season so usually better deals. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I love traveling in the winter.
Those are all great facets of travelling in winter to the destinations you mention…it sounds like you might be partially Scandinavian. 🙂
Again, this isn’t to say that “best” means “only time that people will enjoy.” My take is that it means the time that will be generally be most preferable to the most people (so, ideally, nice weather and light crowds, although that combo isn’t always possible).
As to the winter bias, I’m not noticing exactly what you’re referring to. Doing a quick sort, it looks like 97 out of 270 entries have a checkmark in January, spread across North America, South America, Africa, South and South East Asia and Oceania. Maybe you were sorting in reverse order?
I love this, thanks for your hard work and research.
Whoa cool!
Quick correction, the table says Bangledesh but it should be Bangladesh
Thanks, fixed
Awesome! This will be helpful as I expand my travels using points and miles.
Three nit picks about the table.
1) From my understanding of South Africa, Capetown weather is very different that Johannesburg weather. Maybe you should do like you do with some other countries and make a separate entry for South Africa (Cape Area)
2) Eritrea, from my experience, granted 55 years ago, the plateau area has fine weather except for the short rainy season and is a huge contrast with the lowlands where temperatures in the 100’s are common.
3) Australia, it’s almost as big as the US, and really needs the best times separated by region.
Yes, like we noted above, the goal is to continue to break apart countries and regions to get more specificity.
Thanks.
I really should have started by saying what a massive work this is and how valuable it is as a starting point.
This is very cool, but for Japan I would say that a lot of people LOVE Hokkaido for skiing/snowboarding. Personally I prefer it for the summer months since I don’t like skiing, but I am surprised Hokkaido doesn’t have the winter months checkmarked since it’s so famous for its powder. So I think Hokkaido is a great year-round place to visit for that reason.
Also I think Singapore is pretty good year-round as well since it’s the same temperature anyways so it really doesn’t make a difference. I was just there in December and it was great. When it rains there, it’s generally only for like a few hours, and the weather feels so much nicer and more bearable after a rain.
Agree. Again, the point of this exercise isn’t to say that “best” = “only time that anyone will enjoy.” It just means that multiple travel “authorities” agree that this would be generally preferable for most people.
I’m actually a big skier and so was going to put ski seasons in as well. But, under 8% of the US actually skis. For those of us that actually would think about travelling internationally to do it, my guess is we probably know more or less when the seasons are. Probably, like you, the other 95ish% would prefer to go in the non-winter months. I may end up putting ski seasons in, anyway, but that will be further down the line.
Yeah I was just surprised to see there was a “best” time for Singapore at all since it’s like the same year-round. Agreed on ski season stuff. And Hokkaido isn’t just Niseko, even if that’s the most famous part of it. But in Niseko, summer is definitely low-season since skiing is SO popular there. I do want to go for winter someday even if I don’t ski, just stay at the Park Hyatt Niseko and enjoy the winter scenery and see if they have sledding or something else haha.
just roll with it….its just a chart
This is simply Amazing! Thank you so much for putting this together!
What an awesome resource. Thank you!
.I did this same search for Greece. Went in the beginning of June and had fabulous weather-no wind, heat, or fires. It pays to do research…..
Thanks guys, I immediately thought this was a great idea just from the title of the post before reading it. Great job as I find myself doing a best weather search quite often.
Very nice. Although the first country i searched wasnt there. Rwanda
It’s under the other spelling – Ruanda. I’ll change it to the w version.
Very cool team!! Thanks so much for putting this together!
For the table it would be helpful to freeze row 1 and column 1. It would be great if the entire width of the table would be viewable without scrolling. it almost fits but not quite, alternatively having the table expand width as the browser width is expanded. Is it possible to have the table be scrollable as one long table rather than paginated?
Great suggestions! We’ll take a look. You can make it scrollable up to 100 entries by changing the display number on the top left.
I love the tool! I put in “Ireland” to see what it looked like. Was surprised to see July and August off the list, so checked other sources that said “great weather, but peak tourist season” so I thought maybe your tool could incorporate some nuance, such as a dollar sign to denote “good time for weather, but pricey.”
I really, really like that idea. I’d like to incorporate peak times into this and the $ sign would be a great way to do it.
Outstanding work from an outstanding team!
Would love to be able to download this so I can see all 12 months at once.
See Nick’s reply further down as you how to do with Excel.
I put it into my reading list so I can have it handy and browse whenever.
This is incredible and will be so useful. Thank you for putting it together!
This is unbelievable. Thank you for doing this. I had asked Nomadmania if they could add this to their site. I agree with the suggestions. Thank you again.
Nice job. Thx. Is there a way to download the table? I’d like to bring the data into my own spreadsheet and do some manipulations/additions/annotations.
Good question
Hey Arthur, you can bring this into Excel with Power Query. If you have Excel 365, you definitely have this functionality, but if you’re on anything earlier than 2021, you’ll have to check.
Whenever you’d like to get the updated info from the site, you can right click on the table and hit refresh. You can also set it to refresh every time you open the workbook by going to Data > Queries & Connections > Right click on the connection on the right > Properties > Refresh data when opening the file.
You can also do manipulations to the data within Power Query, there are a ton of resources online that go over a lot of what you might want to do. Just note that if you change the actual data in the table in Excel, it will reset to the data from the website when you refresh.
Hope this helps!
You rock
Thanks Nick for this. I have excel 365 v16.75.2 on Mac OSX. I don’t have the option you describe in step 2 above. Here are the steps I took:
1) Click on the top excel menu (not the ribbon) -> Data -> Get Data (Power Query) -> Run Web Query…
2) This opens up a directory with 2 files ending in “.iqy”. Create a new file in this directory called FM.iqy with the following text:
WEB
1
https://frequentmiler.com/the-best-time-of-year-to-go-to-every-country-in-the-world-in-one-table
Selection=1
Formatting=None
PreFormattedTextToColumns=True
ConsecutiveDelimitersAsOne=True
SingleBlockTextImport=False
DisableDateRecognition=False
DisableRedirections=False
3) Then select FFM.iqy and click the “Get Data” button
4) A screen appears. Just click the “Import” button
5) Viola!
This will be a wonderful resource. Thank-you for putting this together. Have a few suggestions for how it might work slightly better.
Thanks again for your hard work on this one. I will use this table often!Val
Thanks, that’s great input. We took care of Portugal and the resources link and we’ll take a look at the first two as well. I definitely agree with the vertical shading.
This is a fantastic reference guide in a case compact version! The only adjustment I’d like to see would be a “jump to” search box. I open everything on my iPhone and I have to click page by page to find a particular country or region to review. Anyway, seriously great idea!
There is a Search box at the top on the right. It filters on the fly as you type. Very cool, excellent tool.
