If you do your grocery shopping online at stores that use the Just For U program like Safeway, Albertsons and Vons, United’s MPX app is offering 2 miles per dollar spent when shopping via their apps.
While this is a fairly good offer, there might be better options available to you depending on what Chase cards you have or how you value MileagePlus miles.
The Deal
- Earn 2x United MileagePlus miles per dollar spent on groceries when tapping through to the apps for the following grocery stores from the MPX app:
- Safeway
- Vons
- Albertsons
- Randalls
- Tom Thumb
- Jewel-Osco
- Pavilions
- Direct link to MileagePlus X app (scroll down to the ‘Featured Apps’ section in the app to access this offer).
Key Terms
- Miles are not awarded on Rush Delivery orders (i.e. orders placed through Instacart).
Quick Thoughts
If you’re ordering your groceries online from one of the above grocery stores, you might as well get rewarded for it. The bigger question is how to do that.
Earning 2x miles per dollar via the MPX app is a good return, but there might be better options available to you depending on what credit cards you have and what other apps you have on your phone.
If you value United miles at less than 1.5cpp, you’d be better off shopping via the Dosh app seeing as they’re offering 3% cashback for these same grocery stores.
For those of you who prefer ordering groceries via your laptop or desktop rather than your phone or tablet, you can earn 2x American Airlines AAdvantage miles or 2x United MileagePlus miles per dollar via their shopping portals. With the latter option, that 2x rate is only available if you have a Chase United card; if you don’t, you’ll only earn 1x.
A better option than 2x United miles is 2x Ultimate Rewards, although that rate isn’t currently available to all people with Ultimate Rewards-earning cards. The Chase Freedom and Chase Ink shopping portals are both offering 2x, but if you only have a Chase Sapphire card of some variety then you’ll only earn 1x. The 2x Ultimate Rewards you earn can still be transferred to United on a 1:1 basis, but this way you’re retaining the flexibility of being able to transfer them to an alternative travel partner. If you recently applied for a Chase Freedom or Freedom Unlimited card, this means you’d earn a total of 7x Ultimate Rewards per dollar seeing as the latest welcome offer includes 5x on grocery purchases on up to $12,000 of spend in the first year.
If you don’t have a Freedom or Ink card though and don’t want to download Dosh, 2x miles via the MPX app is still a solid offer. Seeing as this offer is available via the ‘Featured Apps’ section rather than ‘United Visa Rewards’, it’s not eligible for the separate MPX offer that’s giving up to 10,000 bonus miles when completing spending tasks.
All of the shopping portal offers say, “Eligible on new customer orders.” Does that mean the offer is only valid on the first order made on the account?
If the portals say that, then that presumably means it’s only valid on the first order. Those terms aren’t listed on MPX or Dosh though, so hopefully subsequent orders track correctly.
I can confirm that it does work in the MPX app.
