Welcome to Frequent Miler’s week in review around the web, where we recap some great posts we saw around the net.

If you’ve found yourself with some Virgin Atlantic miles and Greg hasn’t convinced you that you need to go to Necker Island with them, Gary Leff reminds us that there are some other uses for those miles — like ANA First Class round trip for 120,000 miles.

Methods of earning miles for trips like that are always changing.  As low-hanging fruit like Bluebird and Serve shriveled and mostly died, the search for pajama points as led many to gift card reselling. Shawn at Miles to Memories reminds us to keep an eye out for these opportunities and that pricing, and therefore profit, can be dynamic.

Believe it or not, Avios are not only for short haul flights. Drew at Travel is Free gives us a great list of tips before you use your British Airways Avios. The Avios program can be a bit more complex than it appears on the surface, but it can be incredibly useful if leveraged properly.

If you use bank portals to book tickets on United and American, Mommy Points has a warning you should read. Now that these airlines are selling basic economy tickets, you might not get what you think you paid for.

As an upstate New Yorker, I often have to remind people that New York State actually isn’t one big skyscraper after all — and this week Gilbert Ott at Go Save the Points helps me in that quest with a trip to New York’s wine region. In summer or fall, the landscape is only prettier and outdoor activities abound as well.

Finally, Scott at Travel Codex has created a scholarship program. Like Scott, I did not do much international travel growing up and I think that some of the most valuable lessons learned as a student occur outside of the classroom. He’s offering a fantastic opportunity and I admire that he’s inspiring young people to travel. If you know a student who might benefit, the application deadline is May 3rd.

That’s it for this week’s news around the web. Keep your eye out for Last Chance Deals to come!
