If you’re new to the Point Debit Card
If you’re new to the Point Debit Card, note that the annual fee is now $99. That gets billed on your first deposit or you can choose to be billed $9.99 per month instead.
Note that we no longer list our referral information since referrals are now capped and new users will not receive the bonus once the person making the referral has exceeded the cap.
Quick Thoughts
The PointCard Debit Card initially seems like a wacky value proposition with its $99 annual fee, but with frequent bonuses like this one certainly make it an interesting conversation piece and comparison point against the credit cards in your wallet.
Note that we’ve seen a number of opportunities to save on DoorDash gift cards recently that would make for better opportunities when combined with credit card rewards, so this may not be appealing if you’ve already loaded up your account with discounted gift cards. On the other hand, if you didn’t front-load your account with gift cards, this deal could be attractive. Just take note that the deal excludes physical and electronic gift cards. That isn’t always enforced as written, but I’d expect that it probably won’t work here.
Overall, nice deal if you’re ordering via DoorDash and great to see Point continue to offer these nice payouts.
Trying to determine the value prop of the Point Card – with the $99 fee, it would seem that even if you were able to take advantage of various 5% deals, it would seem that you would need to spend $4,160 in order to just break even on this card. I get to this number by taking the $99 annual fee and dividing by (5% – 2.62%, since that is what FM usually uses for comparisons). Now, if I only used for 10% promos, that number is only $1,341 … but how often can you use if for these 10% offers? Or am I missing some other advantage of this card that I’m not seeing between the lines?
It’s a debit card that earns 1% cash back, so yeah.
But also, they have run almost monthly deals to get $30 back when you use the card 5 days in a row and spend at least $200. I just automate four days of $1 payments to an insurance bill and then it’s like a near monthly Amex Offer for $30 back on $200 anywhere.
I’m not arguing you should definitely have it, but I’ve been happy enough.
