Secret Flying is reporting some great airfares on Air Canada between Los Angeles / San Francisco and Sydney, Australia: from $678 round trip from both cities in August and September. I have since discovered that Vancouver to Sydney is available from $697 USD, and Toronto to Sydney is available for just $702 round trip. Fares around $900 are available from Washington DC, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh and possibly a number of other US cities. These prices are available via meta-search site Momondo via smaller travel agencies; you won’t find these on Google Flights. The fares are available in August and September. Click the pictures below to go to Momondo and adjust dates.

Keep in mind that August is the tail end of Australian winter and September is the beginning of spring. But don’t let that deter you — J.M. Hoffman went to Australia during their winter and got some great photos. You’ve gotta see them here and here.
Bottom Line
These are great prices to Australia for peak travel time from North America. They might not be the absolute warmest months to visit Australia, but the weather should still be decent and the price is certainly right. If you’d like to head down under, you’ll want to check these out. Remember that most online travel agencies should allow you to cancel without penalty within 24 hours. With these smaller agencies, I would advise waiting a few days to make further nonrefundable plans and just check your reservation on the airline’s website to be sure that it went through properly.
Thanks for this great post! You’re right, August and September are late winter, early spring in Australia but in the North that’s the best time to come!! It is the best time to be in Darwin, Northern Territory – in fact the only time we run our 6 day Wild Top End wildlife tour is late August. It is warm but not too hot, it is dry (no rain) and the animals and birds are spectacular in Kakadu!
