IHG is once again offering a targeted promotion for a 20% discount on the cash portion of cash & points bookings, making for a good opportunity to buy points at a discount – from just 0.46 cents per point. This could be especially attractive given that the latest round of PointBreaks is scheduled to go live on Monday, April 30th (See: New IHG PointBreaks list coming on Monday) — which is coincidentally when this promotion is scheduled to end.

Quick Thoughts
This can be a decent deal to pick up some extra IHG points in a hurry, especially if you’re looking to take advantage of PointBreaks on Monday. Discounts apply to the various levels of purchased points for cash & points bookings. The best deal is 20K in purchased points for $92, which comes out to 0.46 cents per point. You could alternatively buy as little as 5K points for $24 (0.48 cents per point).
Remember that what makes IHG sales like this special is that you really are just buying points when booking a room at these discounted cash & points rates. IHG makes it clear on the booking page that if you later cancel, you will be refunded in points (at the full points rate for a night — 35K in the example shown above). Rates can sometimes vary by location, so hunt around a bit if you don’t find a good price on your first search.
With the new PointBreaks hotels costing 5K, 10K, or 15K per night, buying points at 0.46 cents per point is like paying $23, $46, or $69 per night for PointBreaks hotels. While it’s certainly a disappointment to many that IHG now has separate tiers for PointBreaks, my guess is those are likely to be terrific all-in prices for summertime travel at almost all of the properties on the list, especially when you consider the fact that you won’t pay tax when booking award stays. If you have the new IHG credit cards, you would also qualify for a 4th night free, further dropping your cost-per-night to just $17.25, $34.50, or $51.75. That’s pretty tough to beat. I look forward to seeing the full list.
One of the other benefits of the new IHG Rewards Club Premier and IHG Rewards Club Traveler cards is a 20% discount on the purchase of points. I don’t expect that benefit stacks with cash & points bookings, but if anyone has the card and finds out for sure let us know in the comments.

Got the Los Angeles Downtown ICH and purchased 160K IHG points for $736. Will see if they see the reservation!

So the point is to book a cash and points stay….then cancel to accrue cheap points?
Is there also a value in using the booking for a stay?
Great timing for me. Had 2 nights booked in Knoxville for a wedding which was going to run me $183 including the absurd 16% tax rate. Got it down to 10k points + $64 with the promotion. 10k IHG points getting me $120 of value is amazing….but now I need to figure out how to get another stay for accelerate. Woe is me! Thanks Nick!
Isn’t the 4th night free benefit on awards bookings only associated with the new Ihg credit cards?
Yes, that’s correct — the IHG Premier / Traveler cards.
Any properties that you’d recommend for the maximum haul?
Thank you
