Quick Thoughts
Even with the transfer bonus, we wouldn’t recommend transferring Membership Rewards points to Marriott in most situations. Do it only if it’s necessary for topping up on the way to a high value Marriott award.
We value Marriott Bonvoy points at ~0.70 cents each, so with the transfer bonus you’re still getting less than 1 cent per point value – and about the same as buying Marriott points on sale at ~.9 cents each. You can generally get much better value for your Amex points by transferring to airline partners.
AMEX coming out with a flop here compared to Chase still offering a 50% transfer bonus to Marriott (and just finished a 70% bonus the month prior). I really thought we might see an elevated bonus from AMEX after the recent Chase ones.
I guess Chase has to offer better transfer bonuses to make up for not having the same points parade AMEX has going.
Terrible deal. I wish Marriott would acknowledge the value of their points and move to permanent 1:1.5 from both Amex and Chase! Then have transfer bonuses off that. That would put them closer to on par with Hilton.
