(Back) $40 off $125 at Amazon with 1 U.S. Bank Reward point [targeted]

Update 3/18/24: I am once again targeted for a US Bank offer. My offer is to get 40% off when using at least 1 point up to $50 off of $125. I misplaced one of our kids’ Fire tablets on a recent trip, so this is going to help me save a few bucks on replacing that!

Doctor of Credit reports that at least some U.S. Bank credit card holders are being targeted for an offer at Amazon to get $50 off of $100 or more when using 1 U.S. Bank Rewards point. I didn’t actually have a U.S. Bank card linked to my Amazon account, so I just linked mine up. Unfortunately, I don’t yet see any such offer, but Amazon indicates that you should check back 24 hours after linking, so I’m going to keep an eye on this as we are expecting Prime Day deals over the next couple of days.

Quick Thoughts

Until late last year, I didn’t even realize that Amazon ran occasional offers to save when using U.S. Bank rewards to pay. As with all other rewards programs, you’ll only want to use 1 point at checkout in order to trigger the discount — using more points yields terrible value (you’ll be better off paying the rest on your card and using your rewards directly through U.S. Bank for a statement credit).

If you don’t yet have a U.S. Bank card linked to your Amazon account, you can link up your rewards to use on Amazon here (our affiliate link). During that process, Amazon asks whether you would like to automatically apply rewards to your purchases. I recommend turning that feature off so that you don’t accidentally use points at poor value.

Personally, I linked up my U.S. Bank Altitude Go for this rather than my Altitude Reserve because I didn’t want to risk accidentally using more points from my (larger) Altitude Reserve balance on a future purchase. There is a surprisingly wide array of eligible cards (see the list above).

Note that it is impossible to know for sure if you’ll be targeted for the offer after linking, but last year it only took a few days after linking up my US Bank card for me to be eligible to use the discount.
