American Express Platinum Card® for Schwab: Increased 150K Welcome Offer

5

There are several “flavors” of the Amex Platinum Card®, including the American Express Platinum Card® for Charles Schwab. You’ll need to be a Schwab customer in order to get it, which is fairly easy, and it is subject to Amex’s dreaded “family” language.

However, for those willing to jump through the hoops, the card now has a banging welcome offer that gives you 150,000 reasons to consider it. Even better, and unlike the regular version of the Platinum card, there’s none of that silly, “as high as” language.

As far as I’m aware, this is the best offer that we’ve ever seen on the Schwab Platinum card.

Quick Thoughts

One of the unique benefits of the Schwab Platinum Card® is that it allows you to cash out up to 1,000,000 points/year into your Schwab account at 1.1 cents per point, a 10% higher rate than you get with the Morgan Stanley Platinum Card® (which also has a 150k offer) or with the business checking/Business Platinum combination. Although you must be a Schwab customer, it’s very easy to become one, as you could simply open a free Schwab Investor Checking account to qualify.

Amex now has family language attached to the Charles Schwab and Morgan Stanley cards, so if you have or have had the Morgan Stanley Platinum Card® or the “vanilla” Platinum, you may not be eligible for the bonus on this card. That’s not to say that you’re definitely ineligible, just that you may not be. YMMV.

tried again – not eligible for Welcome Bonus – dang. Have the vanilla Platinum currently. Never have had the Schwab Platinum card. Any NLL links around for this?

Recently closed the Vanilla after having it for a couple years. Would be willing to get this version for the SUB. Not a Schwab customer though (currently). Can you check if you qualify for the 150k, then sign up for Schwab account? Or do you need to sign up with Schwab first?

(Silently mimicking the commercial and denouncing “Schwab” in my head as I write this question.

You have to log in to Schwab’s website to access the application

tony

is there any way to get this card if you got the vanilla platinum recently?

apply and see if you’re eligible?

AmEx doesn’t (usually) hard pull your credit after your first card, and they’ve got their pop up warning you that you are ineligible, so there’s little downside to applying.
