It seems to be the day for airline flight promos. In addition to the Norwegian deal for 20% off, Alaska Airlines has launched a promotion offering Buy One Get One free tickets. When buying a ticket for one passenger, a second passenger can travel for free (other than paying for taxes and fees) when using promo code LEAPDAY. There are some key limitations though – you have to book today and the offer is only valid for flights on February 29 and March 3.

Quick Thoughts

With this offer only being valid on flights for two people on February 29 and/or March 3, the terms of the promotion are pretty restrictive. The good thing is that February 29 is a Saturday, so this offer could be good if you want to book a quick weekend trip to another city which could be a great opportunity to use up a free night certificate from a hotel credit card, although this offer isn’t available for the return leg if you wanted to head home the next day.

If you can make a long weekend of it though and return on March 3 – or only travel on March 3 – it seems like you can get some even cheaper prices due to it being midweek travel. March 3 is also National Mulled Wine Holiday, National Cold Cuts Day and If Pets Had Thumbs Day, so those are all excellent reasons to celebrate with a quick trip somewhere that Tuesday.

As you can see from the list of city pairings above, there’s a wide range of routes available for this promotion. Although the terms state that it’s only valid on nonstop flights, the LEAPDAY promo code also seems to work on routes with one or two stops, although that might only be if all legs of the route are included in the list above. For example, if you wanted to fly from Tampa to Orange County, it might be possible to fly Tampa>Seattle>San Francisco>Orange County.

There are some great prices available with this promotion considering you’d be flying with Alaska rather than Spirit or Frontier. For example, you could fly from Chicago to Seattle on Saturday February 29 for only $62 per person. Note that this price isn’t $62 for the first passenger with only taxes and fees being added on top for the second passenger. Instead, it would be a total of ~$124 for two people.

Alaska Airlines CHI-SEA

Prices are even cheaper on March 3, with prices from only $51 per person.

Alaska Airlines ORD-SEA 03.03.20

The total of $100.80 is broken down as follows:

Alaska Airlines ORD-SEA Price Breakdown

You can even book transcontinental flights for less than $60 per person, such as from Portland, OR to New York.

Alaska Airlines PDX-NYC

Be quick if either of these dates work for you as these flights have to be booked today (February 11).
