Quick Thoughts
Amex Membership Rewards normally transfer to Hilton on a 1,000:2,000 basis, so the 20% bonus increases that ratio to 1,000:2,400. That might sound excellent compared to most other transfer partners that are 1,000:1,000, but that’s not necessarily the case.
That’s because Hilton points are only worth ~0.41 cents per point (cpp). That means that 2,400 points are worth ~$9.84 which, at that valuation, means you’re not even getting 1cpp of value from 1,000 Membership Rewards points.
That said, it is possible to get better redemption values than 0.41cpp, especially if you can take advantage of Hilton’s 5th night free benefit on award stays for people who have Hilton Honors Silver status or higher.
For most people, a transfer to Hilton using this transfer bonus will make most sense if you need to top up your balance for a high value redemption, rather than transferring a huge chunk. For example, Hilton awards top out at 250,000 points per night for a standard room. That kind of redemption would require that you transfer 105,000 Membership Rewards points which is a steep ask, especially seeing as that number of points could be redeemed for $1,155 cash if you have a Schwab Platinum card which offers 1.1cpp redemptions on up to 1 million points per year. That’s reduced to 83,333 points per night if taking advantage of the 5th night free benefit, but again—that’s a significant number of points for many people.
In the past, Amex has sometimes offered targeted transfer ratios when running transfer bonuses to Hilton. Please let us know in the comments if you’re targeted for something higher than a 20% bonus.

Amex is being left behind in the dirt by Chase. A crappy transfer bonus and nothing note worthy last few months either as far as I can tell.
