Application Tips

Amex Application Tips

  • Safe to Apply: Amex is the safest bank for trying your luck at earning a new welcome bonus offer. They don’t usually issue a hard pull when denying your application, and if you already have an Amex card, they won't usually issue a hard pull when approved for another one. Plus, they’ll now warn you during the application process if you’re not eligible for the bonus.

  • Lifetime Rule: If you've ever had the same card before, you are most likely prohibited from earning a welcome bonus offer for the card if you apply now. Fortunately you'll be warned during the application process if this is the case. Amex is known to "forget" that you've had a card after about 7 years.

  • 90 Day Rule: You can get at most two credit cards within 90 days. This rule does not apply to Pay Over Time (charge) cards.

  • 5 credit card max: Amex usually won't approve applications for new credit cards if you already have 5 or more Amex credit cards or 10 or more charge cards.

  • Better Offers: You may be able to get a better offer than the best available public offer. Details here.

  • Hard inquiries combine into 1 when approved same day

I listened to your May 2024 podcast. Did you find out when during your second year, card carriers receive the Aspire Free Night award? You mentioned putting the answer in the show notes, but I can’t find it. I see the terms say 8 to 12 weeks, but my definition of that is it could be one week. “Hilton Honors Annual Free Night Reward… You will receive the Reward email within 8-14 weeks after your renewal month.” Is it at least 8 weeks?

There might be an update soon. Just checked the Hilton Website and the AMEX website. Both have removed the 6x categories. Just the 12x at Hilton and 3x everywhere else. Hoping they add something back or new (better).

Can P2/P3 use a Free Night Certificate for a stay by P1?

DP: I just noticed the 165k Business Card offer while I was on the Hilton site, and for kicks I decided to apply, knowing I’d likely get a pop-up reminding me I had already had this card. To my surprise, I was accepted! I got my last Hilton Business card on 1/29/18 (5 years ago) and closed it on 2/26/19 (4 years ago). So at least in my case, it only took Amex four years to “forget.” For reference, I currently have 2 personal Amex credit cards, 2 business Amex credit cards, and 1 business charge card, all of which I use for occasional small spend.

There’s a better offer for Hilton business card. Create a dummy booking and the same offer will show with a $50 statement credit addition.

Emmanuel Ruiz

Hey hey hey! Thx Mona for your $50 gift. A free $50 courtesy of Mona. You made me happy tonight…otherwise just a lousy 125K…hahaha…

Mona

Youre welcome. I applied for the one without so I figured to comment here so no one makes the same mistake again.

Emmanuel Ruiz

You’re great Mona.

Steve

There is now a $100 statement credit for the business card if you perform a dummy booking. Still 125k points after $3000 spend.

Nick Reyes

Do you have a link for that? When I tried a dummy booking, the offer I saw was for the personal (no annual fee) card, not the business card.

Steve

It came up in a modal window, and clicking through seems to have a unique link. It showed the personal window by default, but there’s a “business” tab/link at the top of the modal.
