Chase offering 80% bonus when transferring points to IHG (but don’t)

In addition to the 30% bonus to Avios programs, Chase launched an additional transfer bonus today. This gives an 80% bonus on Ultimate Rewards point transfers to IHG One Rewards which sounds impressive on the face of it, but it really isn’t.

Quick Thoughts

Chase Ultimate Rewards points normally transfer to IHG on a 1:1 basis, so this transfer bonus makes that 1:1.8. If you aren’t familiar with the value of IHG points, you might think that an almost doubling of the transfer ratio would be worthwhile, but far from it.

IHG points are – at the time of publishing this post – on sale for 0.5 cents per point. That means that you can buy two IHG points for one cent. If you needed, say, 45,000 IHG points, you could buy those for $225. If you were to transfer from Chase, even with this bonus you’d need to transfer 25,000 Ultimate Rewards, so you’re getting less than one cent per point. That’s awful value, so it shouldn’t be done.
